Help me name a film

I am awful at remembering films and actors names. DH normally can remember but he doesn't remember this one. Completely odd film. Not the Truman Show, the one I am thinking is the darkest kind of Truman show. It involved an actor/ director who directed his life on film in a big stage set. Which grew larger and he hired actors to life as people in his life.

The protagonist was someone like John Malkovich, but it isn't in his filmography so can't be him. It was in the last 10-20 years.
