Les Mis (2012) directed by Tom hooper is THE best musical of all time.

Thoughts,? feelings? Comments?

No doubt about it that they are far far superior in there singing voices but the film just had a very raw edge and something that gets me every time.

I love it too. But prefer the stage version.
I saw Chicago countless times at the cinema, I was in awe. But again, the stage show is better.
DH is out tonight, I think I'll be digging out my Les Mis and Chicago DVDs!

gabsdot · 16/02/2018 22:03

I love this film.I love all the main actors, even Russell Crowe. It's not Hugh Jackman's best performance, he doesn't really have the range for it, but I adore Hugh so I think he's pretty good. Eddie Redmayne is adorable as Marius and he's a lovely singer. Anne Hathaway is amazing.
I've been sick this week so I re-watched it the other day. Loved it.

AaronPurrSir · 16/02/2018 22:07

The stage show of Chicago has been ruined by producers insisting on casting terrible soap stars and pop stars in the leads, rather than trained musical theatre performers.

PaperdollCartoon · 16/02/2018 22:07

Les Mis in the theatre is incredible but the film fell short for me I’m afraid.

Mytholmroyd · 16/02/2018 22:49

Enjrolas could sing Grin m.youtube.com/watch?v=dCMzphskotU

Mytholmroyd · 16/02/2018 23:13

Red and Black was beautifully done I thought by George Aaron and Eddie

purpleme12 · 16/02/2018 23:17

Nope. I love it at the theatre seen it numerous times. The film was quite boring and nothing compared to the theatre.

bambambini · 17/02/2018 15:55

I love Les Mis in the theatre but no - give me Calamity Jane, TSOM, Westside Story or even Oh What A Lovely War. I’d love to see WS or JCSS on stage.

Lj8893 · 17/02/2018 16:01

accidently there was another actor Jonny Purchase, in the film who played one of the students who has played Marius in the west end too!

I love love love the show, film was good, I enjoyed it but can't compare it to the stage show!

ineedaholidaynow · 17/02/2018 16:05

Love the theatre production more than the film, but did like the film.

Has anyone see the Miss Saigon DVD? Saw this screened at our local cinema, that is an amazing production, although more raunchy than I remember the original theatre production Blush

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 17/02/2018 17:20

Yes @ineedaholidaynow I saw it at the cinema and I have listened to the soundtrack on loop since then 😕

It's been years since I saw it on stage but yes, much more raunchy than I recall but having been to Vietnam I think it's much more in line with how Saigon would have been then.

ShowOfHands · 17/02/2018 17:26

The book and stage show are breathtakingly beautiful.

Eddie Redmayne sings like Kermit, Russell Crowe is weak and Jackman, nasal. The Thenardiers are too comic as well. It has its moments. Myriel casting is poignant and Gavroche and Grantaire and Eponine are VERY good.

PuppyMonkey · 17/02/2018 17:32

It’s ok bug the best musical of all time is West side Story, closely followed by Singing in the Rain.

I like The Greatest Showman much better than the film version of Les Mis.

fusushumi · 17/02/2018 19:50

I enjoyed Les Mis much more than I thought I was going to (and even got a little teary....) but the best musical of all time is My Fair Lady

BrigitsBigKnickers · 18/02/2018 10:42

Russell Crowe just massacred the part of Javert-horrible nasly voice- why why why choose an actor to play a part in a musical which is all singing when they can't f*cking well sing??? Acting was really hammy too.

Hated Amanda Siegfreid with her whiny high pitched voice and thought Anne Hathaway was horribly miscast too.

Usually I like Hugh Jackman's voice. Unlike most of big names in the cast he has actually been in Musicals on Broadway but he just didn't sound good in this film.

Mrsjellybum · 18/02/2018 14:41

I think I love it so much because it was the first time I'd seen les Mis. Never see any other version or on stage.

Lj8893 · 18/02/2018 16:41

You definitely need to go and see the stage version then OP, if you love the film then the stage show is something else!!

Mrsjellybum · 18/02/2018 19:31

I would loooove to
The 2 times I've been to See a musical I was with people who'd already seen it.

Although wicked was absolutely awesome.
And I saw the queen one. Can't remember what it was called

Lj8893 · 18/02/2018 19:35

We will rock you? I was so disappointed with it!
Wicked is amazing, one of my favourites.

Definitely go and see Les Mis, it will blow you away!

IStillMissBlockbuster · 18/02/2018 19:58

We will rock you - The WORST and most disappointing musical ever!

mercurymaze · 18/02/2018 19:59

the best muscial is oklahoma with hugh jackman

sportyfool · 18/02/2018 20:06

I've seen Les mis on stage 4 x .. with proper singers it's mesmerising ...

ineedaholidaynow · 19/02/2018 00:36

If you can't get tickets to see Les Mis you can always get the anniversary concert DVDs (2 versions) They don't have any scenes from the theatre production but the singing is amazing.

Miss Saigon is touring this year, debating whether to get tickets for that. Saw the original version a couple of times, although not sure if I could cope with the emotions ( bit of an emotional wreck at the moment Blush)

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 19/02/2018 06:45

I decided on not seeing the touring production of miss Saigon, the west end cast went over to broadway so I'm not sure if I will like the touring cast- no one can top Jon jon briones Engineer.
