I use to think Star Wars ruled the science-fiction world of film entertainment but, over time the flames have steadily begun to ember out.

Space films seem to have moved though waves of development over time since the 70's. I would like to volunteer three (3) periods of movie evolution, which are 1. CGI 2. Digital Compositing 3. Motion Tracking. It would seem film studios were at war to make the elite of special effects movie for a time. However, after the tightening of movie budgets presently, films have began to lean out, and the use of older real-life techniques of special effects photography have been re-implicated. Hence cutting astronomical budgets, and production of better quality films that lead to profitable franchises.

In conclusion, what's your take on space SiFi movies? What style of filmmaking grabs your attention? Very lastly, name a SiFi film other than Star Wars, which you consider to be iconically epic.

Thank for participating!

Blade Runner springs to mind. I think the personality driven films stand the test of time better than action driven plots, but Blade Runner had both. It was very visually distinctive too and the special effects filled a purpose. I liked the second Blade Runner too but I did feel that it had rather too much special effects to impress rather than contribute to the story.

Contact is a firm favourite, and arrival my new entry for sci first favourite. Also love district 9/chappie for dystopia

Oh and of course moon, which is so good but not to be discussed with anyone who hasn't seen it to avoid spoilers.

All 3 of my choices very plot based rather than effect heavy, and contact and arrival are also great films about strong women as a bonus.

I was also going to say Moon but my all time favourite is Silent Running. What happens to the little robots still make me cry. Also, Logan's Run - really tacky production but thought provoking.

Interstellar.

Twistofanxiety I love Silent Running (sob) and Logan's Run too.
