Got this out on DVD last night, didn't really get what the fuss was about. It would have been quite a good film had it not been for that woman droning on in the background 'she walks into the room and puts her leather handbag with the gold trim down on the emerald coloured expensive sofa' type stuff. What was that all about? The woman had the most droning voice I've ever heard.

lolved the book
loved it loved it

MrsSpoon · 18/03/2007 21:06

I haven't read the book but was put off that it might be high detail (like the woman droning on the background of the film - 'she enters the room wearing stilletto heels and another stunning black dress' sort of thing), is it like that?

no very funny

MrsSpoon · 18/03/2007 21:13

Will look out for it then, sounds like it would be better than the film.

I saw it at the cinema and remember nothing of a narrator droning on at all! Perhaps you had some other option switched on DVD?? Odd.

expatinscotland · 21/03/2007 09:33

I cannot stand Anne Hathaway's big ol' mouth and toothy grin. I've had piles that were less annoying.

She's like Julia Roberts, you wonder how she got famous.

And the bloke who played her boyfriend: everytime I see him I want to shave some of that mop of his OFF. He's too hairy.

The book was good, tho!

KezzaG · 21/03/2007 09:33

Im confused, I saw it at the cinema too and there was no droning woman.

I liked it, thought Meryl Streep was fantastic, but really didnt like the stroppy boyfriend. He couldnt even support his girlfriend for 12 mnoths while she got her career on track, cheeky sod.

DrMarthaMcMoo · 21/03/2007 09:46

Was it some kind of option for partially sighted/blind people? Like a voice-over? Not that I've seen it but it sounds a bit odd. I got the Garfield movie out on DVD yonks ago and couldn't change the setting from "director's voice over" so had this constant running commentary...sounds similar.

fryalot · 21/03/2007 09:47

Just to slightly hijack this thread - if anyone in the states wants a copy of this dvd, I have one that I can't play on my uk dvd player. Cat me and you can have it.

gigglinggoblin · 21/03/2007 09:51

book is excellent, miranda is far nastier and stuff like stroppy boyf is much better explained. film ok but a bit disappointing after book (but they usually are!). i have no droning woman on my dvd either

treacletart · 21/03/2007 09:51

Sounds to me like you watched it with an audio description option selected. There certainly wasn't any commentary in the original film. Mind you I've got to say I thought Meryl Streep was the only good thing about this film - it smacked of a made for tv kids movie to me. Ugly Betty dis it all better in the first 2 episodes.

Tortington · 21/03/2007 09:51

the film was pants

MrsSpoon · 21/03/2007 17:15

ROFL!

I think I must have had some sort of commentry on! DH has just bought surround sound and the DVD player is in the surround sound unit and I remember trying to sort something at the start (I couldn't hear the voices only the music) and nothing seemed to work. In the end I think I pressed every button on the remote before giving up, turning the sound on the surround sound right down and just using the telly sound. Doh! That's what I must have done!

It really makes me appreciate my eyesight, at least I don't have to watch films with that commentry.

Still feel a bit stoopid though.

Twiglett · 10/04/2007 09:33

I thought the film was crap (although the book was a fun read) ... are you sure you didn't have the audio commentary switched on .. it sure sounds like you did

TLV · 01/05/2007 14:32

dh bought me this and I was a little disappointed and didn't see what all the hype was about sides its been done so many times before (dull looking girl at beginning, stunning beauty at the end) my fave was neighbours the girl scott has the fling with (mangle girl and I'm going back to the eighties here) one minute ugly duckling next a stunning beauty

sorry rambling on

prettymum · 01/05/2007 14:36

book is so much better than the film!

Troutpout · 01/05/2007 14:46

Saw this recently...well i saw half of it...i fell asleep it was so boring

fannyannie · 01/05/2007 14:48

I saw it and quite enjoyed it - but then I did watch it at about 2am one morning at work to pass the time LOL.

docket · 01/05/2007 14:49

Oh no, this has just arrived from lovefilm! Is it really that bad? Is it (wimpers) worse than Love Actually?

thequeenofcontradiction · 02/05/2007 12:32

We sat through ten minutes of it, then turned it off. Could they not have made Anne Hathaway look just a little bit geeky and unstylish? Of course they couldn't.

I prefer Ugly Betty.

NadineBaggott · 02/05/2007 12:36

this wouldn't normally be my sort of film but fancied it - you've put me off now

flatmouse · 02/05/2007 12:41

I thought the book was pretty crap so not planning on making the effort to watch film - will probably give it a go when it comes round on sky.
