I have got this ready to watch for later, and was wondering is it as good is it has been hyped up to be?

I absolutely love it. Emma stone is fantastic in it.

MusicToMyEars800 · 20/05/2017 21:53

Right, I have just started, so will get back to you all when it's finished, I have had 3 glasses of Wine though.

So?

FreeNiki · 21/05/2017 00:19

I saw it twice.

First time I fell asleep and missed a huge chunk.

second time i saw it about 10 people walked out.

it's dull

MusicToMyEars800 · 21/05/2017 01:04

just finished it.... it was MEH!! I was expecting more tbh, the ending was a disappointment, the film was slow and a bit boring, and I love musicals, it had good points there were parts where I laughed and smiled, but not many, I feel like I just wasted 2 hrs of my life! well as per usual a hyped up film did not lie up to the expectations.

I watched the trailer just before I was about to download last week, and decided it looked waaaay too boring and we watched Fantasic Beasts instead!

TheBenignSorceress · 21/05/2017 05:11

Super disappointing. The dancing was really mediocre. The opening scene with people dancing / singing around their cars on the flyover was lacklustre and cheesy. Esp the bit at the end when they all look like they are going to get back in their cars then - no! - they suddenly sing one more word. Made me think of a teenage amateur production.

The story is a serious cliché from start to finish. I found Gosling arrogant throughout and I usually like him. Loved him
In Drive.

I watched it on a plane, it was ok to pass the time but nothing special. Immediately after I watched Lion and sobbed (in hindsight the fellow passengers probably preferred it when I watched la la land Blush)

Sprog19 · 21/05/2017 07:46

I loved Lion!

JennyHolzersGhost · 21/05/2017 09:30

Ha, I watched this last night too OP Smile
Going against what seems to be the consensus view, I liked the ending. I wasn't so sure about the singing and dancing - it felt as though there were two films in one, fighting with each other. There was a classic Hollywood musical with a happy ending, and then there was a serious non-singing-and-dancing meditation on ambition and the sacrifices people are prepared to make to fulfil their goals, with no happy ending. In that sense it was an interestingly meta take on what we expect of film genres also perhaps - ? But maybe I'm overthinking it Grin

On the characters and lead actors - I agree with whoever said above that Seb is rather patronising by mansplaining and blacksplaining jazz. Ryan G I have complex Hmm feelings about at the best of times Blush but a more appealing actor wouldn't have managed to convey Seb's negative qualities so I think he was a good choice for the role.
Emma S did a good job, I thought. The dinner table row scene was absolutely made by her facial expressions. Not generally keen on the ditsy actress trope so at the start of the film I thought 'oh dear here we go' but her character shaped up as it went on, I thought.

All in all it was better than I expected but I don't think I'll be watching it again.

HeadDreamer · 21/05/2017 10:47

I watched it on a plane too and I thought it was good. Not amazing but entertaining. I loved the ending too.

papayasareyum · 21/05/2017 11:00

I loved it. It's a classic. It might even end up in my top five films of all time ever.

MysweetAudrina · 21/05/2017 11:04

Thought it was awful and I normally love musicals. I watched Hidden Figures the following night and thought it was a really inspiring film.

MusicToMyEars800 · 22/05/2017 10:23

I was so bored through it I kept checking in on Quija, which was on film 4, and I don't like horror films Grin so I was getting myself freaked out by that and then watching la la land to bring down my scare levels Grin
I will not be watching it again!! Mysweet What is Hidden Figures about?

SouthWestmom · 28/07/2017 22:45

The characters are meh

gingerhousecat · 29/07/2017 21:34

I loved it!

mydogisthebest · 12/08/2017 09:30

Me and DH watched this last night. I had read this thread beforehand so was not expecting much!

We both really enjoyed it. I agree that it was overhyped and not sure it deserved all the Oscars but I still thought it was a pretty good film

Sgtmajormummy · 21/08/2017 22:46

I watched it about 3 weeks ago with DH and DS who are definitely not the expected audience for a romantic musical. We all enjoyed it.

It was good to see Ryan Gosling's musical skills again- I recall him playing the ukulele in another dramatic film- but he's certainly no Fred Astaire!

Starwoman1990 · 23/08/2017 16:44

I want to see this too, but am skeptical lol

MusicToMyEars800 · 23/08/2017 20:11

Starwoman It is a bit of a let down I have to say Grin
