Ooh that's an interesting question. I have seen all sorts with my eldest DD. We saw Mean girls, Freaky Friday and Breakfast Club recently.
But my son? I honestly don't know. Will have a think and see if this thread inspires me. I still have time, he only watches minions, dragons and incredible atm. Oh, and he can name ALL the my little ponies which DD2 watches.

Minions, Dragons and Incredibles are a pretty good start. May I recommend the King Fu Panda films at some future point? And the Ice Age and Madagascar films.

Which are of course great for girls too (I certainly love them, and Star Wars too).

We saw King fu panda 3 and loved it. He also like the jungle book this week (warned them about scary bits).
Probably will watch Indiana Jones, Transformers and similar popcorn fodder in the near future. His dad can do Star Trek/Star wars, I'm more a geek! Tends to be the case that teens lead rather than take on recommendations though, I mean, I'm only 45 what could I possibly ever know?!!! That said, DD1 loved Miss Congeniality, we still say Wear the crown, be the crown, you ARE the crown now. She's finishing reading The perks of being a wallflower and will then deign to watch it on Netflix with me. Otherwise it's a question of taste: she loves vampires, dystopian and teen stuff, I dip in and out. We both enjoyed Maleficent though.

It's an interesting one though. A friend of mine still does movie night once a week as a thing and I had that as a child, although looking back, I do wonder what the hell they were thinking...bodysnatchers, anyone? But my kids are different ages so I find a title we can all watch every so often rather than weekly. Jumanji and Zathura were good for DD2.
In terms of what they ought to watch for their own education or as a rite of passage or because it's a classic, not sure I can get mine to watch anything they don't want to but if they are mature enough to take recommendations without whingeing about it being in b+w then I still think Twelve angry men is a classic.

Ds2 is 13 and loves film. I've watched Inception, Kingsman and Grand Hotel Budapest with him, on his recommendation.

He's sneakily watched several films that are way too old for him, but he enjoys them as classic/influential cinema and I know I can trust him with them (even if I don't actually allow it). We're talking Pulp Fiction, Godfather, Fight Club here. He knows his onions with film, and points out things that I wouldn't normally spot (symmetry in Wes Anderson movies came up last night).

He's going to be watching Withnail and I with me as soon as I get it on DVD as my old VHS has snapped.

Ooh he sounds fab Harriet, I am going to watch Kingsman soon with DP. I loved Grand Hotel Budapest. I haven't noticed symmetry though maybe you have a future Roger Ebert there? My teen has also seen films she shouldn't have but she is very good at knowing her own limits now: she asked could I watch American Horror Story with her but we both bailed after five minutes, lightweights we are! Has your son seen Moon? I love Sam Rockwell. My DD wasn't convinced but Mr Robot was also brilliant.
