Has anyone seen The Martian?

I've read the book and it was amazing. My DS (8) really wants to see it as he is obsessed with space. The film is 12a so we could take him to see it with us. However the book had lots of strong language. Wondered if the film was the same?

Here advises 4 uses of the f word, but in the uk it was a 12a and I remembered it was * out for the email and she doesnt say it when she is reading his email

There are some gory bits when he operates on himself. The trouble is my dc are now 18 and 20 so I dont take note so much nowadays.

another parental guidance

We went to see it today, it was great! Just a few f words and mostly obscured in any typed messages so would think would be ok for 8 year old.

I LOVED it! We took our kids, the youngest was 11. They really enjoyed it too. There is more swearing than I was expecting and there's a pretty gruesome scene near the start that had me cowering with my hands over my eyes. And a Matt Damon body double's bum. Tbh, 8 year old boys would probably love that stuff!

I think my only concern would be that's it well over 2 hours long but you know your kid, so know if they could sit still that long or not.

Took my 4 boys to see it, aged 9 - 15 and they all loved it, and it's rare to find a movie that pleases all of them! It is long but didn't feel it. DH who has a degree in astrophysics and a special interest in Mars exploration said the science was pretty accurate too. A movie that makes science so cool can be forgiven the odd f word in my book!

I saw it, there's a gruesome part as Chips says where he has to dig something out of himself, but that's the worst part. There is swearing but that personally doesn't bother me. There was no particular violence or sexual stuff. I thought it was great! I would recommend 3D though, I saw it in 2d and you could tell the 3D would be fantastic.

It's excellent, and I honestly can't remember the swears so they can't have been that bad. New respect for Matt Damon as an actor after this film.

Yes, I've seen it. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Brilliant film, very funny as well as exciting and moving and I imagine it would be great for turning kids on to "science".

Glad to hear how good this is. I'm thinking of my interests, not a child's.:o

DH and I were given Gold Class tickets for a birthday, and are looking for a film to spend them on.

Immersive and all the science was well explained! Had funny moments too, I think some kids would like it if they had an interest and a good attention span.

Fantastic film and only a couple of swearing bits . My 9 yr old loved it as we all did .

Bit of swearing, but not gratuitously. Grim bit were he is impaled and removes it. That's it really.

On aside, it's quite long so limit drinks or he might be bursting nearing the end!! Also 3D wasn't particularly worth it imo

It's amazing. Well worth it for the space obsessed.
