I had the pleasure of watching a sneaky preview of the new film, Suffragette, last night and I wanted to post before it's release on October 12th to urge you to go and watch.

Be warned, you will probably leave the cinema with the rage of injustice!
As you can imagine, Suffragette is all about equality, sacrifice and determination as well as delivering a dramatic slice of history.

It stars Meryl Streep (who is holding a webchat with us on Thursday the 8th October), Carrie Mulligan, Anne-Marie Duff and Helena Bonam Carter, lots of big names who really don't disappoint.

Have a look at the trailer and let us know what you think, and do look out for the webchat thread next week where you can post your question to Meryl Streep.

Just to add, for those living in London: Palace of Westminster tours (Houses of Comms and Lords) are doing suffragette tours in October, recommended for children over 7. Adults £10, children go free. My dd really enjoyed all the stories of women shackling themselves to ancient monuments...

That trailer made me fill up. We take it so for granted what those women did for us. I'll definitely be going to watch it and maybe I can persuade DS too...

I saw it last night too. It was a very good film, amazing to see what the women did and the strain it put on their families/relationships. The film is very well done, tells the story and makes you realise just how fiercely the women fought to give women a voice, something I have been guilty of taking for granted.

I need someone else to watch it and tell me whether she gets her kids back or not! I'm not good with things like that. I need a positive ending to a film these days. It does look very good though.

Hi just wondering, from those of you who have seen the film, would it be suitable for an 11 year old?? My Dd really wants to see this and I'd love to take her, just a bit weary that there might be scenes that are unsuitable? It has a 12A rating here. TIA

I probably wouldn't, MrsSteven. It has scenes of sexual assault, physical violence, and a mother being forcibly separated from her child. It's quite heavy.

I'm going to take my 11-year-old next weekend (I saw it on Friday). It is quite violent and distressing in parts but I was surprised when I spoke to her this weekend how much she already knew about suffragettes. We spoke about force-feeding and violence. I think she'll be ok with it. The sexual assault is not that blatant (unless I've forgotten a scene but I don't think so) and I think it will go over her head. I think Emily Wilding Davison's death will be shocking but it isn't actually graphic.

Thanks Devora & Bigbadbarry (great name ) I'm a bit undecided about it now she is quite a sensitive soul I think the mother being forcibly separated from her child would probably upset her most but she does know quite a bit about their story from school and she would love to see it. Would you mind letting me know how you get on with your Dd Bigbadbarry, thanks

Saw it last night with my grandson.really enjoyed it, if that's the right word but came away wondering why it wasn't based more on emmeline pankhurst's life which was quite remarkable In itself.

My 12 year old grandson enjoyed it.

Well I took Dd to see it and we both loved it, very emotional and really powerful, Dd thought it was amazing and couldn't talk enough about it when we came out, the death of Emily Davidson was shocking in a I can't believe that just happened way not graphic or gory....its an excellent film.

OP you were spot on with the 'rage of injustice' feeling! I watched it this afternoon and felt quite emotional. I remember briefly learning about the Suffragettes at school but not really in too much detail so I've now ordered a couple of books on the subject after seeing the film.

Well worth a watch folks.

Very good film. I have absolutely zero complaints, which is very, very rare for me.

I was a bit surprised it had so much action, actually. When I learnt about the suffragettes in school, it was one or two sentences and a picture of women in old-fashioned clothes - one got the impression that they did one or two peaceful demonstrations and the men saw reason.

Glad this film is now there to show people how it really was.
