Kids fallen in love with Ponyo, but don't know what else we should get. Have seen Arrietty too. They are 9,6,6. Any recommendations?

Hmm... Depends. A lot of 6yo's would be fine with it I think. Lots of explosions, some guns, bit of fighting, but some really beautiful bits as well.

MerryMarigold · 19/08/2015 20:19

Mine are fine with guns n stuff. Ds1 watched fantastic four (9, 10 in Nov), but it's the scary stuff - atmospheric music followed by screaming, green heads rolling around the floor, huge monsters/ small people etc. that they find scary.

My dd loves ghibli films, she's 8 and her favourites are Pom poko, spirited away, totoro and the cat returns.

TeamBacon · 19/08/2015 20:37

Ah, Def watch Laputa then. I love it Smile

TeamBacon · 19/08/2015 20:39

I mean, DS loves it Grin

Totoro is the sweetest by far.

Fact - it was originally released in Japanese cinemas as a double bill with Grave of the Fireflies!

My personal favourite is "Only Yesterday" but that's definitely for adults - not because it's scary, just very slow-paced, with philosophical themes.

fuzzpig · 20/08/2015 09:06

Wow Trousers you've just blown my mind with that Totoro fact Shock how bizarre!

fuzzpig · 20/08/2015 09:07

I do love Laputa but I've never managed to watch it all the way through. It's just too long and I'm too scatterbrained!

Fireandicicles · 20/08/2015 09:14

Yes totoro, Kiki, panda go panda, and spirited away.
I wouldn't recommend Grave of the Fireflies for kids although my DD has loved it since she was 6, and it is a great film.
I really liked my neighbours the Yamadas.
Pom Poko and the cat one is dreadful.

Colyngbourne · 01/09/2015 22:20

Nausicaa is good for younger children.
That said, all mine watched all the Ghibli films (including Pom Poko and Grave of the Fireflies) by the time they were approx 10/11. I think Princess Mononoke is one of their favourites, along with Kiki and Totoro.

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 10/09/2015 21:23

I was a bit Shock at Totoro after reading lots of people on here and their little DCs loving it - there is one bit where the adults are dragging the pond because they think the little one may have drowned Shock

But saying that... neither of the DCs seemed to really get that, or at any rate they weren't upset by it and both loved the film.

batshitlady · 24/09/2015 17:28

Totoro is lovely. Some of the other Gibley films are a bit bizarre.

Allgunsblazing · 24/09/2015 17:36

Princess Kaguya
The wolf children

:)

Spirited Away, Pom Poko, and Porco Rosso are my favorites. Porco Rosso is slightly more mature but not scary at all, just nuanced in my opinion.

southeastastra · 18/12/2015 19:51

i have just watched the first half of princess mononoke, it's so bonkers but brilliant. makes me a bit sad really (forest vs industry) really good film making.

if only kids watched these instead of dismal disney

SailorJupitor · 29/01/2016 12:12

My Neighbour Totoro, Spirited Away, Laputa, Princess Mononoke, The Tale Of Princess Kaguya, From Up On Poppy Hill... there all good in fairness.

There is Grave of the Fireflies, but it's a very heavy film, probably not one for small children.

Happy Ghibli-ing! Smile
