Can anyone recommend a film we might all like?

Shouldn't be too hard, we aren't pushing the boundaries of diversity in this group Grin

4 middle aged women with interests such as reading, gardening, politics and community activities (rather than activism). I am hosting for the first time. My fallback film would be the Ciaran Hinds version of Persuasion but this really would be a fallback as we have all seen it. I thought about Boyhood which is right i think but it's 2.5 hours long and we get together on a weeknight. Any ideas?

Boyhood is good. Just go to bed half an hour later? Smile

wouldn't get too hung up on your interests - you'll miss a lot of great films.

Babadook now out on DVD I think.

Trying to think of films I saw last year which should now be out on DVD.

Obvious Child mildly amusing but with plenty to think about.

Dallas Buyers Club.

Pride.

Locke.

Under the Skin.

Gone Girl (I know many don't rate it but I enjoyed it a lot and thought it better than the book)

Mr Turner

Inside Llewylen Davies

Wolf of Wall Street

Nightcrawler - loved loved loved this

Films I saw earlier this year which may be out soon - Ex Machina. Whiplash. Bird Man. All great.

The Worlds Fastest Indian. Watched this yesterday with DH, DS2 (13), none of us particularly like motorbikes/sport but we loved it, was a really charming film, Antony Hopkins is absolutely brilliant in it.

Frank. Loved it

Dallas Buyers Club is excellent if you haven't seen it. Everyone I know who's watched it has enjoyed it, and my friends are a similar demographic to yours.

Together is a very, very funny film (that also has a good storyline) if you don't mind subtitles.

The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Imitation Game

The Lunchbox. Don't let subtitles put you off.

Menace II Society. It's about a magical teddy bear called Lord Johnathon the third and an evil man stole his cake. It's fun for all the family! :D

momb · 02/04/2015 00:58

Best Marigold Hotel
What we did on our Holidays
Notes on a Scandal
Mrs Caldicotts Cabbage War
Ladies in Lavender
Calendar Girls
The Quartet
Kinky Boots
...all very British but beautifully acted

A Late Quartet
The Book Thief
The Kite Runner
The Time Traveller's Wife
Life of Pi
....Good film versions of the things you would have read if you were in a book group together

4 weddings and a funeral
Notting Hill
Love Actually
The Full Monty
Emma
Persuasion
Sense and Sensibility
Pride and Prejudice
....They'll have seen them all but they are all good!

Oh that's a shame you went for deletion MNHQ. I'd like to see what unpleasant thing someone would post on what must be the most innocuous thread going...

Many thanks to all posters, I'm probably going to go for Pride this time round and will get The Lunchbox for me and DH as I think we'd both enjoy that. In general I've got plenty for the future list so many thanks.
