Rant about people who talk when watching a film at the cinema

Why is it beyond some people to not be able to stay quiet when they go to the cinema. Why go if you want to talk? I went to see a film today and half way through the girls (young adults) in the row in front just kept on talking. I wasn't directly behind them more off to the left and I did hear a few shhh but to no avail so resorted to picking a moment when there was no dialogue in the movie to loudly tell them to shut up or get out which worked.

ARGHHHHH its so flipping distracting and annoying.

I agree. And also annoying when my family insist on chatting through good progammes at home. We often watch box sets and they insist on chatting about what other programmes actors were in etc. Drives me mad!!

It is very rude and annoying - many years ago DH and I went to see Silence of the Lambs and a older lady behind us talked the whole way through, telling her friend what was going on, it took her ages to work out the night vision glasses scenes!

I can't decide if it's worse than people on their phones during the film (I don't mean talking on them, but reading stuff and so on). Now, god knows, I sympathise at having to watch such utter shit as The Smurfs and Top Cat (I am still traumatised). I knit through this dreck to make it tolerable but the light from a phone in a darkened cinema is incredibly intrusive.

With talking I think people are genuinely too stupid to realise they're not at home in front of their own telly. I think some people have the telly on as background noise in the way that others might have the radio on. (I can't bear either on as a background distraction).

oh tribpot they had their phones out too but if I ranted about that I would of worked myself up into a hulk style rage Grin

Ah well if they had their phones out, you should have reported them to the staff as potentially pirating the movie. I think that would have had a rather immediate impact Grin

That sounds good. I did something a little similar to someone who was talking, albeit quietly, on her cell. I think if you ask, in a fairly loud voice, for the person to please keep quiet, your own noise somehow embarrasses them.

I went to the cinema WITH a talker last week.

A friend who I've never been to the cinema with before, who felt it necessary to make remarks about every single scene. I wasn't even turning my head to acknowledge her after the third time, but she kept doing it until I asked if we could talk about the film AFTER it had finished.

And exhale...

I've got a friend who feels the need to explain the plot to me at various points throughout the film - especially when it's a "Dun Dun Duuuunnn!" moment.

"Oooh!" (Nudge) "That's that bloke who was watching her at the restaurant! Do you remember?!"

(Gasp) (Nudge) "That must be the brother who she thought was dead then!!!"

Etc etc. Drives me (and presumably everyone around us) potty. Bless her she must think I'm a bit hard of thinking.

At my local cinema in Au, about six weeks ago the screen flashed up "turn off your mobiles and don't talk loudly or all the time".

Now it says "turn off your mobiles and don't talk". :o

This was fine but me though woman nearby trumped the chat by vigorously oiling her cuticles, moisturised her hands and forearms for the first fifteen minutes of the film. Utter, utter tosser.

Eurgh, why?! I've had the shame of going to the cinema with a talker, and trying my best not to tell them to shut up.

The last film that was ruined for me by talkers was Interstellar, people constantly going "WHAT?! I don't get it! What's going on?" all the way through
