Spiderman - aargh, 12A rating! Anyone seen it can advise?

Had it all planned - DS1 age 12 and DS2 age nearly 8 could go and watch Spiderman today, not many films out that they would both enjoy. Thought it would be good for them both to have a cinema trip without me sitting with them. Then saw it's a 12A! So can't really let younger DS in without an adult. Anyone know why - violence/language? DS2 loves Bond films at home, and Harry Potter - surely not much worse than those? Would I be the only parent who would send them in illegally......I don't really want the expense of another ticket for me....

Hmm have just read up and it sounds like some of the scenes are a bit violent. Oh well that's that idea gone. Can't imagine for one moment the 12 year old will agree to taking his brother to Rio....

We saw it and tbh it went totally over the head of the nearly seven year old. Far too grown up a plot to follow and romance etx.
Worst bit, the romantic taking her up to the bridge to view the city and the small one says 'now he's going to push her and say you try being Spider-Man and flying'
So, wouldn't bother.

That's a shame (can't advise on the film sorry, superheroes = yawnfest IMO! :o)

Can you invite a friend to go with 12yo on their own, and you go to something else with 8yo?

DS (9) saw it last week with a friends family. I checked the parent reviews and thought it would be ok. Both boys were very frightened by it so I wouldn't recommend it for a younger child.

Not violence as such, although obvs there is a bit of fighting, but the Jamie Foxx character is quite scary looking and has a really disturbing creepy voice! My 9 yo DS was a bit scared but loved it.

Dd also came (she is 7) and was in tears at one point (won't tell - spoiler alert - but an emotional rather than violent bit) but she still said she really enjoyed it and has been watching x men films this weekend. She cries at the scary bits in Disney films anyway (the sea witch etc)

I'd say for a sensible mature 8-9 year old who is familiar with the stories and characters then it's a great film, but if they are easily frightened it's probably best avoided.

Yep I think we'll give it a miss. He probably wouldn't be worried by the violence, but anything emotional will finish him off - we had to leave the Harry Hill film as he was upset about the hamsters.
