and I don't mean Dirty Dancing and Grease

They can turn up some real gems and be very evocative without being obvious.

What are you favourites?

I absolutely love film music and have just got the music from Pride and Prejudice off Amazon - now trying to play the title piece "Dawn" is alot harder than it looks. The composer - Dario Marienelli was robbed of an Oscar for it last year.
Also loved Gustavo Santaolalla (?sp) music for Brokeback which won the Oscar. I agree the Morricone theme from the Mission has been miss-used over the years - what about his music from the spagetti westerns? fantastic.
Hans Zimmer can do no wrong too - his music for the Gladiator was very effective.
I have the soundtrack to the film Chocolat - primarily to hear the lush Mr Depp play the guitar - but it is all excellent - composer is Rachel Portman.
And Thomas Newman had a very haunting string composition in Road to Perdition. I could go on but I fear my anorak will become visible.....

I used to love the Diva soundtrack when I was a pretentious teenager and the Betty Blue one too and Paris Texas - they all really take me back

big morricone fan - once upon a time in the west probably my favourite, but they are all epic.

Powaqqatsi, Koyaanisqatsi - phillip glass soundtracks superb.

Diva got a mention - love that too.

Blade Runner
apocalypse now has some great tracks in it in memorable scenes (although a manfilm that one)
