The Hunger Games is absolutely brilliant!

I have not read the book and totally avoided any synopsis.

Utterly excellent just a shame I had to take 5 11yos.

A very strong female protagonist.

Long though.

Enough said - go and friffing see it.

I have just finished the first book and am part way through the second and finding them really good. Quite fancy the film too

It is really good, but I thought it was really stretching the 12 rating.

12yo DD was so distressed at one particular part, not long before the end that we had to leave the cinema!

DD-12 (Y8)and a group of her friends went to see it last night. To say she is obsessed with the books is an understatement (she's read each of the trilogy four times so far). They all loved the movie, but the ones who had read the books loved it a little less than those who didn't, as they felt the motivations couldn't be properly be understood in the movie format.

We went today. Dd1 was finishing the last chapter in the car on the way!!

It was fantastic. Now I can read the book, hooray! Loved the portrayal of Katniss, such a strong young woman.

You really should go and see it, everyone!

I'm glad it's seems to be good, DD is driving me mad about the books! DH was going to take her tonight but I think shes going with the school on Tuesday (House treat!)

It wasn't very gory was it?

Mmm you don't much gore but it's implied and some death scenes are quite shocking. You see a lot of dead faces and it's very realistic. There's one bit where the whole cinema rocked back in it's seats and went "aaargh" together!

My 12 year old dd and her 11 year old mate loved it. My 10yo ds will like it. Dd2 is 8 and would have been terrified!

I am scared to see it because the books are so good and movies always ruin books I love and replace my imagination with their hollywood ideas. But on the other hand I dont think I can stay away. I actually wish books I loved did not become popular aarrgghh

Dd1 saw it today and said it was brilliant.

I finally read the first book last week and enjoyed it a lot (apart from the last few pages, which were rubbish) so will probably go and see it when it's on at the 'arty' cinema, which won't be full of teenagers!

I took my 10yd DS as he had just read the 3 books, I knew he could handle the film.
We were very excited to go together it was great!
Afterwards he complained that the killings were too 'shakey cam' so you couldn't see what was happening, I did explain that as the point and what made it a 12A rather than 18!

Saw it yesterday with DH. I had read the books and he hadn't.

We both really enjoyed it. I obv prefer the books but it was very good.

DD is 11 and desperate to see it. I've read the book so I know what happens in the story. Not sure if she'd cope with the suspense of the whole plot and the dogs at the end, etc.

Would it be too much do you think for a 9yo who is no so keen on 'real life' and death stuff, all fantasy sci fi is no bother as he knows it's not real.

Is it quite graphic and scary for a 12a?

Viva, maybe you could let her read it first? I haven't seen the film yet, will soon, but i think reading may be less shocking than seeing it in front of your eyes. Though the book itself is intense.

The dogs at the end made everyone in the cinema jump out of their seats and were by far the most graphic bit of the film (though I only cried at Rue's death).

I'd suspect 9 is a bit young unless it was a very mature 9!

I'm reading this right now, and can't wait to see the film. I'm not normally one to latch onto kids-as-adults books but these really are the exception! In no way like Twilight or Harry Potter. Harry Potter was obviously written for children, and Twilight made me want to kill myself in despair at Bella's wet lettuce-ness

Anyway! Loving this thread and it's interesting to see the perception of some of these posts - reading them, I thought they were balanced and a fair assessment of your views? Like you're all pretty much saying it's kind of violent but not terrible and it's more implied, etc etc. But did y'all know the DM have used some of these posts in an article about how the film is TOO violent? Hahaha!

DW saw it as research to see if DS would be okay with it....her view was that it was no worse than some of the Harry Potter films and 007 ones.

We think the problem is with the whole 'selection process' and seeing children not much older than himself dying needlessly really. He is still fighting the whole inevitability of death and think he might struggle with the notion of them having to fight to the death. Certainly Roo's demise was apparently very moving and that particularly would be hard for an 11/12 year old to take on board....

I thought it was a bit disappointing, in that it skimmed over things of gravity from the book...and I felt it could have been longer.

children killing each other, snapping each others neck, sounds dreadful. Why is a film like this necessary for children to view? Child death scences?!? I just don't get it?

Caro, the books were YA (young adult) fiction, so the characters are mostly children/teens, but the books/films are not exactly for children.

And why?... Honestly, i think you should read the book(s), i don't think that could be answered in a paragraph or two :)

I thought is was terrible!

It seemed as if they were trying to make the whole thing very emotional, but I found that they only bits that resonated with me were the parts between Katniss and Rue (?). The "love (or fake, but then kind of) story was completely emotionless and awful. Peeta is a drip.

I just thought the whole thing was tripe. I am not a film snob, I watch all sorts of crap.
