How far should a ban on porn go?

A ban on face-sitting (woman sits on top of a man in a certain way so he can give her oral) porn will come into effect in England and Wales in the next couple of days (along with strangulation however that is already illegal).

A Labour MP, see image, says in a now-deleted tweet she wants to "bring online porn law into parity with offline porn" and hints at criminalising oral sex on men too even if it is between consenting adults.

So what is the end goal with this if consenting acts will be criminalised too? A complete blanket ban on all porn even if everyone in it and watching it are consenting adults? Prisons are already bursting at the seams so do we need to build more prisons to fill them with all the people who watch porn?

I'm also not sure how said MP expects porn sites to enforce a filter on checks notes anything involving mouths to British visitors. Porn sites not based in the UK will either just ignore the UK Gov or just ban British users from visiting (many sites already do one of these two options because of the Online Safety Bill). The Online Safety Bill has already proven difficult to enforce as Ofcom have found out there's nothing they can do if websites based abroad refuse to pay fines for not complying with the British Online Safety Bill.

As i understand it the Labour MP in question was not seeking to criminalise oral sex on men in porn. She was trying to draw people's attention to the link between oral sex and throat cancer. Which to me is actually a good thing because many people seem still very ignorant about this - as has been evident on threads on MN in the past.

To my mind any moves that attempt to regulate porn content and the porn industry and the availability of porn are welcome.

I agree that any move to regulate or reduce the availability of porn is a good thing.

I've been the victim of domestic abuse from a teen that was entirely driven by hus access to porn.

I'd never heard about the throat cancer link before.

I was thinking exactly that yesterday. Actual rapists and abusers are being let off or released because we don’t have enough prisons.

This is another example of the British tendency to implement stupid rules and laws so that they can punish a few easy targets so they are seen to be doing something instead of addressing the actual problems.

It’s stupid - as I’ve said before, there’s far filthier written stuff which is in no way shape or form hidden from the eyes of teens. Loads of teens consume fanfiction - more girls than boys - and the content of that doesn’t even have to abide by what is legal! You could find written descriptions of illegal sexual acts within a few minutes of searching. You can be scrolling for a nice feel good story and scroll past some horrifying synopsis!

I don’t believe any porn that is of legal activities should be banned. And realistically, what good has any of the governments porn actions done. It just means an extra vpn step for anyone consuming normal porn, and anyone consuming dangerous content will carry on doing so. If you could stamp out wrong by making it illegal there’d be no csa.

When you are talking about "filthy written stuff" what exactly do you mean? I presume it is fantasy?
Because the thing about visual porn is that real women are subjected to real violence, humiliation, and extreme sexual acts for the gratification mainly of men. I'm struggling to think of what written word could be worse than that.

If we're doing this to stop women having to act it out for filming, then we're realistically doing nothing with this ban. How much is UK made? How much is UK consumed? It'll all still be there, it'll still be made, and depending on how the filters are implemented, potentially anyone going through a vpn will still see it cause if the filter is location based it's not going to realise you're actually viewing from the UK! It's knee jerk thinking that doesn't actually do anything.

I don't know about the rules for animated porn atm. But I shall try and find out when I have time.
I think.though that a real person being subjected to acts of violence and sexual.assault which in any other context would result in criminal charges is of much deeper concern than the written word. We are talking here often not about acting but the women being forced or coerced .

Sorry - forgot I was editing and went on a rant - my original post did talk about animated stuff but I just did a bit of deeper googling and no, it isn't counted so we can ignore that. Animation can do what it likes apparently.

I just don't feel like this is actually going to do anything or make any difference other than make people who implement it feel like they've done something.
