According to someone I have never heard of called Shane Gilles. Article in the guardian today. I don’t go to the gym, I swim instead, but I think this attitude is both pernicious and creepy with outdated attitudes to women and clothing. Anyone experienced this in the gym, or out of it come to that.

I work out in leggings and a sports bra. I occasionally see women in the gym with very short shorts, the sort where your bum cheeks hang out the bottom, but that's their choice. It's up to them what they want to wear. Similarly, there are men wearing gym singlets with their nipples poking out the side, and that's not a problem either. I guess this Shane guy wanted to cause some controversy to get noticed, and it worked.

This guy is a comedian who would and does say any kind of offensive shit about anyone and anything in order to get attention.

Best ignored.

I didn't know "whores" wore cycling shorts, a vest top with built in support, ankle socks and Brooks trainers but fair play to them if they do. Comfier than high heels and a mini dress.

I watched the routine, it's very, very poor "observational" humour peppered with casual homophobia "I don't want to look like a lesbian" and misogyny. He makes the most trite and nauseating observations which are not the least bit amusing. It would have been funnier if he came in and fell on his arse.

I do find US comedy fairly shit on the whole. Even Modern Family has a ton of casual racism in it that wouldn't fly in the UK.

Wait until he sees what wonen wear in the pool!

HoppityBun · 18/10/2026 17:34

Does this mean that I’m now an actual whore, then?

I’ve just come back from the gym but there was, fortunately for me, nobody else else there.

Am I a whore because I go to the gym and wear clothes?

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 18/10/2026 17:47

Funny, you'd assume a guy like that would have more experience of what sex workers actually look like, eh.

SchoolOfCool · 18/10/2026 18:12

I've lost count of the number of fishnet clad testicles I've accidentally seen thanks to men bench pressing in their swimming trunks. Is that gay sex worker attire?

MoistVonL · 20/10/2026 10:34

He's an arsehole comedian making a pathetic sexist "joke" about women. Because to him the important thing about women getting fit is their clothing choices for the male gaze and perceived sexual availability.

Plus ça change.

At least this nonsense gets roundly rejected more than it did in the 80s.

Lucyintheskywithnoidea · 20/10/2026 10:43

Does he make any suggestions of what we should be wearing?

TheLastSilverSaint · 20/10/2026 10:55

Obviously he's a twat and best ignored.

However, I've seen numerous threads on Mumsnet from women essentially saying exactly the same thing in moderately more polite language, and they invariably get lots of other women agreeing with them and claiming that wearing skimpy gym shorts and sports bras is for silly vacuous women who want to pander to the male gaze, and boasting that as a proper feminist they only wear leggings and baggy t-shirts to the gym. Anyone who dares to wear makeup at the gym also gets short shrift on Mumsnet, I find. I think seeing this worryingly ingrained attitude from other women - women who in many cases would insist they are feminists - is more disturbing than seeing it from a crap male comedian who is merely begging for attention.
