I'm reading a book where something happens with a Dalit (Untouchable) person which I thought was unrealistic for the 1940's when it was set. So I looked it up and found this. It was written in 2022, but I don't expect much has changed since.
It's completely shocking how these women are treated. Many are essentially slaves paid only in clothes and food (which they have to rest out of separate bowls than the ones they say for the family "employing" them.
We really don't know how lucky we are, do we? By that I'm thanking my lucky stars, not suggesting that we don't fight to put right wrongs in this country.
