I think I am most surprised that the LADO substantiated the allegation.

Of course they didn’t know the origin of room 101.

idiots

Life 101 is nothing to do with Orwell’s Room 101. It is derived from an American class (learning, not social) designating the basic level of a subject, the essentials you need to know about it.

Very concerning that people who need to use AI to work out why a book may be unsuitable, and who clearly know very little about literature, and who cannot make sensible associations between classic literature and modern entertainment, are given authority over a trained librarian and over children’s education.

This is dreadful. Poor 'Emily'. The children in the school have been let down very badly, but they should at least be able to get access to a wide range of books from the public library. Her career has been ended by that safeguarding determination. Even if it's overturned, as it should be, her confidence will be shattered.

TerrysChocolateFish · 03/04/2026 18:37

Huh, book bans and then using safeguarding as a reason to punish a librarian for putting books like Heartstopper and Girl, Woman, Other on the shelves of a school library? That's really bad.

They obviously didn't know the origin of Room 101 (and could learn much from reading Orwell's nightmare of totalitarianism), but i don't think that's why the library section was called "Life 101"
Surely it's nothing to do with 'worst things', but is part of the trend (irritating IMO, but that's irrelevant) to show that the information is at a basic level - it should be written 1.01 - the first sub-section of the first section of an instruction manual.
Everything about the school's approach was wrong.
