Female only scholarships open to men

The Australian government has officially gone batshit crazy. They are offering 500 scholarships to increase female participation in STEM, but of course, they are open to to non-binary people and anyone "who identifies as a woman". So effectively open to anyone, no questions asked.

Hahaha. Why am i not surprised, as time goes on the government will get more bonkers.

I knew it was Australia as soon as I read the title.

This is in the postgrad section eligibility check:

"How do you describe your gender identity?
Woman
Non-Binary
Man
I use a different term (please specify)

The purpose of this grant, provided by the Department of Industry, Science and Resources (DISR) is to support individuals who identify
as a woman or non-binary person in STEM. All applicants must identify as a woman or as non-binary or may refer to themselves using a
different term.
While the term non-binary is regularly used to include all people who do not identify as a man or woman, ATSE acknowledges that this
term may not describe your own gender identity, and therefore, you are welcome to nominate a different term. "

They're going to catch out the 'mens' with that.

So presumably not open to trans men? Are they well represented in STEM?

LoudBlueSeal · 16/02/2026 07:01

@TestingTestingWonTooFree

Interesting point, I don't know. Perhaps they come under "different term," as in...

"All applicants must identify as a woman or as non-binary or may refer to themselves using a different term."

Or their existence was forgotten, as per usual.

In effect then , trans men aka biological women are doubly disadvantaged as they don't identify as women so cannot / will not apply under this scheme. If they apply as males they will experience the same discrimination that women experience in this field as they will be recognised as biological females in majority of cases.

True, I hope one complains.
