Smaller meal portions for women

Currently watching good morning Britain and they are discussing If smaller portions should be offered to women to help with obesity rates as women need fewer calories.

Er is there no obese men on the planet? I feel like given a few years, we will all be micro chipped and have every thing controlled for us by the government including our portion sizes.

So now they know what a woman is? It's a start, I guess.

LifeBeginsToday · 09/12/2025 07:54

I eat a smaller portion than DH. Even at my 5ft 9 am I fair bit smaller than his over 6ft with a smaller frame and appetite. Women are built differently to men, that isn't a bad thing.

DuchessofReality · 09/12/2025 07:55

No need to target women specifically but I think different food portions sizes is a good idea. Older people also often want smaller sizes.

Newsenmum · 09/12/2025 07:55

This is unbelievable! They should make smaller portion sizes for everyone if that is the issue. They dont know how far along each woman or man is with their daily calories when theyve reached said meal.

Prelim · 09/12/2025 07:55

Well they could just offer smaller portions as an option. A bit like the child’s option. It doesn’t need to be targeted at women, by dad eats less as he’s got older. Sounds like a great idea to me.

Id like the trans option.
Maybe it gives you the best of both! 🤣

clamshell24 · 09/12/2025 07:56

If it costs less!

WelshRabBite · 09/12/2025 07:57

I eat less than the average man, BUT if I go to a restaurant and order the same as a man, and pay the same as a man, I expect the same size portion, then I take the leftovers home for the next day 🤷‍♀️

I’m happy to have a Happy Meal, rather than a Big Mac Meal for example, but I’ve ordered that and paid less for it.

Why don’t they just let women do what they want with their bodies 🙄

Obese men do exist though so why are they singling out women? That's the issue.

Offer smaller portions if necessary but offer them to everyone. Not all women have tiny appetites.

InLoveWithAI · 09/12/2025 07:58

Smaller portions where?

In restaurants? Ready meals?

I absolutely would not want to be ordering 'womens' sized food 🤨

I wonder how many men who insist they are women would be happy to eat a woman's portion when they go out for a meal. Or maybe when it comes to calorie intake, they remember that they are men.

Justlostmybagel · 09/12/2025 08:00

I bet they're still planning on charging full price for the smaller portion too.

FastTurtle · 09/12/2025 08:00

I wish more places did offer a smaller plate option. My DS and I have chatted about this in the past and he said it would have been good for him when he was trying to lose weight.

I have some questions:

Will the smaller portion cost proportionally less than the large one?

Does a 5’11 women get a smaller portion than a 5’4 man whether either wants it or not?

What if the woman was intermittent fasting and that was her only calories for the day?

I thought it was apparently impossible to tell if someone was a woman or not. Does this mean we can now tell automatically? (But what if a woman has short hair, or a man has a gold handbag?)

Wednesdaysotherchild · 09/12/2025 08:02

They better not try that if I’m breastfeeding, I’m so hungry, I’ll eat them instead! Not all women want tiny portions!

P0PP · 09/12/2025 08:02

I would love for there to be a smaller option at all restaurants. I often want a child’s proration but it’s restricted to age. Food portions are huge and o don’t like wasting it so feel guilty but I struggle to finish most restaurants meals

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 09/12/2025 08:03

I generally eat more than DH, even though I’m slim and he’s overweight and a few inches taller than me. I’m a lot more active, which makes a difference.

Also, don’t hormones affect women’s appetite more than men’s? I know there are certain days of the month when I just can’t stop eating!

Restaurants offering small portions as an option is a great idea, and I know a lot of people who’d appreciate it, but it shouldn’t default to women. I am still angry about my FIL refusing to give me and SIL seconds of Sunday dinner because “you’ve had enough” but offering to them to the men, and that was over a decade ago.

Dutchhouse14 · 09/12/2025 08:03

I wouldnt be impressed if i was given a smaller dinner than DH!
And of course men are obese too so i think offering everyone a a choice of portion is size is ok but it shouldnt be targeted at just one group.
However it is a (sad!) fact that most women need less calories than most men.
I am a short women in my mid fifties with a full time desk job, Iv been trying to lose weight and the basic number of calories i need to maintain weight (TDEE) , not lose weight or gain weight but just stay the same is very depressingly around 1500 calories a day-its brutal but apparently a scientific fact!!
So it is very easy to gain weight as a short menopausal woman.
Maybe thats what they were saying?
But yes if i was asked if id like a small portion and DH wasnt I would be annoyed!!

ScarlettSunset · 09/12/2025 08:05

I'd be happy with smaller portions when eating out as long as they come with proportionally smaller prices.
Not because of me being a woman but just generally I think portion sizes are often too big and too expensive.
Just given women smaller portions because they are women though? No, not a chance.

Meat and two veg/one veg/no veg options.

Ohpleeeease · 09/12/2025 08:06

Women do need less food on the whole but grown ups should be able to self regulate. It would help if there were different portion options other than just child and adult. Peckish, regular and greedy perhaps?

oviraptor21 · 09/12/2025 08:06

They should not be offered to women. They should be offered to all.
I'm unlikely to want smaller portion sizes for many years to come as I'm extremely active and don't snack much.
Except pizza - would love half size pizzas to be on the menu.

And yes, my DH eats less than me.

khfippjjj · 09/12/2025 08:08

I’d be up for a smaller option as I do eat much less compared to the males in my life (but as a grown adult I just leave what I don’t want to eat on the plate!), but it shouldn’t be a man or woman thing, restaurants could just have different sized plates and price accordingly. I’ve been to carveries that do this, but I suspect most won’t as there wouldn’t be much cost saving to them in the smaller plates but would likely disproportionately hit profit.

HorrorFan81 · 09/12/2025 08:11

Would love there to be a smaller portion option but definitely not for women specifically- just for anyone who wants to order it
