Horrible sexist manager

My manager seems to hate women.

He regularly cracks sexist jokes in the office and offers a false apology afterwards saying that if anyone's offended then it's tough because that's how he is.

On a recent night out a barman was being rude to me when he came up behind me and asked if the barman was "putting me in my place."

I've come home crying twice because of his actions and I'm ready to change jobs. He's useless too.

I can't understand for the life of me what I've done to him personally. I'm good at my job, I finish tasks within the deadline etc.

Do you have a HR?

Funkyslippers · 10/12/2024 07:33

Doesn't sound like it's personal. Also it doesn't matter how good you are at your job. This sort of tosser is probably doing it to you as he can see you're offended as that's what he wants

OP you need to start keeping a diary of his behaviour.Time/date/incident/witnesses/evidence eg email.

Look into your company's grievance procedure and take it from there. Contact Acas and get further advice.

What actions are within your power and best interests. Do them. Then if there's stuff you can't change, decide how you are going to let his behaviour have least impact on you. Act, don't let him derail you.

We have HR but nothing ever gets done. The women are also supporters of Gregg Wallace and that the women Fayed abused are only putting forwards complaints now to make money.

Sounds vile. How easy is it to move within the company or get another job? Pp is right. Keep a note of everything he says starting with a note of what he said at the bar. Do other people in your team feel the same as you?

Lovelyview · 10/12/2024 07:48

Sounds toxic. If you're not going to get any support from HR or the women in your team then maybe start job hunting.

EBearhug · 10/12/2024 08:21

It would count as sexual harassment, if you were to put in a complaint. Sometimes, it's easier just to go to another job.

NobleWashedLinen · 10/12/2024 08:33

Sounds horrible but yes you just need to vote with your feet and leave. Its a tocix working environment but given what you say about other workers its an embedded culture not just one person. The company will suffer in the long run as they will only be able to retain staff from the small pool of unpleasant people who will tolerate such attitudes rather than enjoy the talents of the wider population. Its not your role to change them, just get jobhunting but nake sure you tell HR when you leave that your main reason for leaving was the toxic nasty attitudes of your manager and colleagues. They won't do anything immediately but if they consistently lose well qualified people after a short time for similar reasons and start to spot a pattern the senior leadership may eventually start to make changes. Or maybe not but if so it's their loss.

I imagine that he works on the idea that "if I can get away with it, I will". Therefore you need to complain - is there another manager or somebody above him (or an HR or EOp person?).
Or just anyone else he annoys, or just another woman who agrees with you?
