Me, scrolling through Facebook: oh, look, Friend is at Wembley.

DH: What's he doing there.

Me: Watching England play football.

DH: They're not playing today.

Me: Well they are. It's the women.

DD: You know, the women's team who were runners up in their last World Cup.

DH: You didn't specify if it was women.

Me: You assumed it was men.

DD: Ah men. Only 50% of the population.

Now he's sulking.

I'm going out anyway. I was going to cook for him, but I think I might leave it. In the name of equality. Give him this opportunity.

BRB, just getting my eyes. They rolled so hard they're under the table.

he is being U to sulk, obviously, but in fairness he's only following pretty much the entirety of western media, which all use "country/area/team name" as default for "men's team" and add "women" on in the same way they add "U-16" or whatever to denote anything else.

Be honest, if someone in your office said they saw "Man U" play on the weekend, wouldn't your initial assumption would be they meant the men's team?

Not saying that's right, it's ridiculous the media can't just add 'men' in the same way they add 'women' when referring to any team, but currently they don't, so it's not unsurprising the majority of the public default to thinking the same way.

They're starting to. I heard a report the other day referring to the 'men's Champions league' (or similar - I noted the men bit rather than exactly which competition).
