In praise of Mary Earps

Before the Women's World Cup, the England goalkeeper, Mary Earps, said that Nike refused to produce an England shirt with her name and number on because there was 'no demand' for it. This was despite the fact that sales of her club shirt were among the highest across both men and women.

Since then, everyone agrees that England might easily have been eliminated from the tournament but for Mary's outstanding performances.

I know not everyone is interested in football or sport in general but her treatment by Nike is a sign that there's still a way to go to reach equality. She's a great role model too!

Totally agree, she's a rock.

MrsMitford3 · 07/08/2023 14:03

I agree 100%

Apparently Nike said if they did it for her they'd have to do for all of the teams goalies and they wouldn't sell.

Bollocks.

There was a very famous Brazilian player (Marta) retiring after this WWC and she gave a fantastic speech about not having any women to look up to as a little girl because the games weren't even televised. She was very well spoken and very moving.

We still have a long way to go!!

WGACA · 07/08/2023 14:13

She is awesome!

Bristolnewcomer · 07/08/2023 14:28

All the time in the word for Mary Earps, she was a hero this morning.

Ridiculous about not making shirts - do they extend this rule to the premiership? I'm sure I've seen goalie shirts?

Titerama · 07/08/2023 15:12

It’s awful and insulting that they didn’t issue a shirt for her.

she’s bloody brilliant.

senua · 07/08/2023 15:15

Hmm, is she missing a business opportunity here ... Grin
Cut out Nike the middle-man, Mary!

You're right. You can buy club shirts - Mary's Man Utd shirt is a bestseller. It's just that some people prefer shirts for their national team.

Yesterday we had a great display from the Swedish goalie who also plays for Chelsea. In fact, most of the matches have seen some excellent goalkeeping. Women World Cup Goalkeepers 1, Nike 0!

I absolutely love her and would buy her England shirt - if it were available - in nanoseconds.

truthhurts23 · 07/08/2023 16:01

they seem to prefer people like dylan mulvaney

I must look out for that Marta interview. She is a legend. Having a role model is so important.

But we already know Nike's attitude to women. They hired Mulvaney to mock women's sport in general so why would Mary be given the shirt?

Titerama · 09/08/2023 08:16

Could we not have just one feminism thread that isn’t dragged into being somehow the fault of trans people?

There’s a whole other board to discuss that side of things.

Back to Mary Earps…

It’s really hard to get girls to even try being in goal.

The grassroots sport would be thrilled to have more ways to celebrate female goalies, and it’s really wrong of Nike to have blocked this moment for the England team, for Mary, and for all the brilliant girl goalies out there.

GreenAllOver · 09/08/2023 08:31

My football playing dd is really scared about being in goal - pressure is so high. Guess what she went out and practiced, inspired by Mary Earps, after watching the last England match…?

Oh that is brilliant. Well done your daughter! I think this Women's World Cup is really showcasing the goalies so let's hope it will encourage more girls to play in goal.

I agree she’s been treated appallingly. When Women’s wages are so low on football it’s also a missed opportunity for sponsorship too.

Yes. I’m sort of relieved that I don’t have to buy a Nike shirt…..

PuttingDownRoots · 11/08/2023 13:37

It sounds like a contract issue. In future they need to make sure the contract (when given to a sportswear company) includes making a replica goalie shirt.

nettie434 · 21/08/2023 18:30

Just reviving this after yesterday's stellar performance. I bet I wasn't the only person who loved the shots of her response after saving the penalty.

Earps was great. She emerged as a star in the tournament.

I think the crossbar is about a foot too high in women's football as the goalkeepers should be able to touch the crossbar without having to jump. Spain's winning goal in the semi-final (a shot that went straight at the keeper who was stood in the line), that was a routine save in mens, but in womens it went in under the bar as the gk couldn't reach it. The Swedish gk got chipped while stood in the line...its purely a height thing, so that's very unfair.

StarlightLady · 21/08/2023 20:49

You may have read the recent article regarding Nike refusing to sell Mary Earps’ goalkeeper shirt and alongside this the refusal of Nike to sell any female goalkeeper shirts and Adidas’ decision not to sell any goalkeeper shirts from the Womens World Cup 2023.

We need to unite, and demand this decision is over turned.

I agree Nike should definitely make a replica shirt for her however it wouldn't be something I would buy for my child. She doesn't seem like a great role model for kids, aggressively swearing at the other team like that.

AreYouShittingMe · 22/08/2023 07:05

There are lots of male goalkeepers who can't touch the crossbar without jumping...
