You can read for yourselves at nzherald.co.nz ,Diversion means he basically gets away with it, no criminal record.

Diversion is a scheme where the police prosecution service acknowledge that the crime is on the lower end of the spectrum but anyone seeing the video would be disgusted in my opinion.

Another shameful day for New Zealanders.

Diversion in the UK would probably mean the involvement of mental health services i think. Isnt it the same in NZ?

Diversion in the UK will mean that he has fully admitted the offence, does not have any criminal history and the victim is happy for diversion to take place.

This isn't a dumb 13 year old stealing a car for a joy ride to impress his friends. It's a grown man who violently attacked an elderly woman! How can that not have some kind of punishment?

Sheisthedarkness · 14/06/2023 05:30

The victim opposed diversion and was told it would not happen due to the seriousness of the offence.

It is awful that they made that u-turn just before sentencing. Perhaps the timing was in order to prevent the victim from making a timely protest?

Felix125 · 14/06/2023 17:11

Ah - it might be different in New Zealand, but in the UK, divert schemes are only for non-serious offences and need the reporting person to be happy with that as an outcome generally.

This would not have been diverted in the UK, unless there was an exceptional circumstance attached to it.

Bloody hell. Seems the world over the police are determined to undermine themselves.

turbonerd · 15/06/2023 21:25

That does not inspire confidence in the NZ police. At all.

Diversion? Distraction . Denial.
