I watched this tonight and feel a bit confused. The queer theory influence was all over it and irritating, but... it had feminist touches too.

The main character is an older women struggling with the demands of her young adult daughter, elderly dad, needy husband and struggling business.
The role of the mother is right at the heart of the film.

The end seems to be about acceptance and reconciliation. I can't quite work out whether the mum is the solution- yay- or the problem. It reads both ways, she both saves the world and is the source of the danger.

Did anyone else think too hard about it?!

Oh dear! Sadly detail isn't my thing. Thanks for the clarification, @Tealsofa

Probably fairly recognisable even with my mistake, though.

definitely!

:-)

I like it. I don't think too deeply at all. It's a comic action film with a middle aged woman as the hero. How often do we see that? Also, Michelle Yeoh is 10 years old their the husband. It's good to see someone like me saving the world. I can identify so much with her role as the mother, daughter and wife.

SpringBunnies · 21/03/2023 13:23

I mean she's 10 years older than the actor playing her husband.

Yes, I liked EEAAO though it went on a bit too long. I love Michelle Yeoh and loved her being the middle-aged superhero! Didn’t really pick up the Queer Theory angle.
But it pales beside The Woman King, which I also saw recently, about the (real historical) women warriors of Dahomey in Africa. Viola Davis as their amazonian leader is magnificent. Obviously fictionalised, but utterly inspiring. Has anyone else seen it? Highly recommended.

I tried to watch this the other night. I thought it was boring too. Thought the butt plugs bit was odd and like a PP, turned it off just after the mother and daughter dildo fencing.

RaininSummer · 22/03/2023 17:29

I turned it off after about 25 minutes as it was dreadfully full.

picklemewalnuts · 22/03/2023 20:35

I missed the mother daughter dildo fight. I assumed people were misnomering the but plug fight.

Nothing I've read here inspires me to see this film 🤣

I don't think I would have either!

I watched on the basis of 'award winning' 'innovative' and parallel universes.

To be fair it was all those. There was no award mentioned for 'most gratuitous use of butt plugs and dildos'.
I might have reconsidered!

Well i preferred it to the banshees of iniseherin

Me too 😀

I liked it although I was really unsure for the first half an hour. Glad I stuck with it. I also watched it from a ‘what if I turned left instead of right’ perspective. How different life could have been etc.

i found the butt plugs and dildos a bit odd but the whole thing was weird. It was supposed to be.
