How are we still stuck with tiny pockets?

I’ve got pocket rage. Spent two hours at the weekend sewing pocket extensions in for pairs of jeans after weeks of not being able to fit my hand in, let alone keys, or a phone.

FFS. And these were properly pricey well fitting jeans, UK made, built to last and cut nicely. Lovely design, not tight but really well shaped for woman-shape bums and thighs.

There was no reason the pockets couldn’t have been the same size as on the mens.

Raaaaaaaage!

and breathe.

I don’t understand why this is still going on.

In the 80s I was grumbling about having to carry a stupid bag when my brother had pockets, or give him my purse to put in his pocket, and then he spent my money, the git.

But here I am at ridiculous age, having to give DH my car keys on a walk and keep my phone on my wrist loop because the stupid stupid jeans manufacturer can’t see why we want more than half a finger’s depth of pocket.

@Jibberstanley How do you see pocket extenders? Is it quite straightforward or do you need to be experienced at sewing? (I don’t even have a machine.) I had been fairly blasé about women’s jeans pockets until I first fished tissues out of DH’s pockets before laundry and reaching down into his capacious pockets made me feel like a vet in an episode of All Creatures Great and Small.

Don’t know if it’s ok to mention this here, so please delete if it’s not cool, but I know another mum nearby who runs a site specifically to find clothes with pockets for women. Only
mentioning it because it seemed bizarre that nobody had done something like this before, because the demand for them is clearly there! I remember going out to gigs in the 90s in old combat trousers from the army surplus store and being able to fit my cash, keys, lip balm and cigs, and somehow never had a problem with forgetting where they were or fumbling around to find them 🤔

Yes @treespeas, just came to see if anyone had posted about that podcast segment. Here's a link: The curious case of Percy Pig and the missing pockett* from

i can literally hide half my arm in them as well as all my things 😁

Yes- I actually plan to put a couple of D-rings on the belt as well, to hang things from (eg clip keys on while riding a bike. Much easier than taking them in and out of a bag, and making sure they're properly zipped in, each time you get on or lock the bike up)

pastabest thank you! That looks great.

^sew pocket extenders, not see them 🙄

Rectangle of old bed-sheet fabric.

Folded and stitched up the two sides to make a pouch that when turned, matches width of existing pocket

Cut slit in bottom of original pocket.

Sit the extension inside the original pocket and sew the two together.

When all done, you get a smooth extended pocket.

It’s fiddly in places, but technically easy with a sewing machine. I wouldn’t do it handsewn - too much risk of seams coming undone.
