If you think we should be grateful that women aren’t dying in droves with maternal deaths, being constantly pregnant, or that women can work after marriage, or that our children mostly survive infancy, or we have labour saving devices that mean women aren’t chained 24 hours to domestic servitude, we are setting the bar extremely low!
There’s this thing called progress. Civilisations progress . Humans have a basic instinct to drive progression and expect the next generation to be in a better situation than the last. In most of the worlds history that is the case- people want to Procreate as they see opportunities for their children they never had.
The issues start when people start seeing that their children will be worse off. Birth rates drop and whether we like it or not we do need the young to provide for the elderly.
Right now progress is halting and we are faced with perhaps the biggest threat to human race since the peak Cold War or world wars, or the plague. Global warming is extremely worrying for a lot of 20 somethings, covid has set the world back economically and is far from over. In the uk particularly we’re seeing massive economic fallouts of covid and brexit- ok they’ll be short lived in grand scheme of things but worrying for youngsters who’ve not been through hard times before. Womens rights are being actively rolled back: USA and abortion or even some birth control techniques, gender idealology, Afghanistan, under funded maternity services. Plus women are still fighting for rights in practice the law says we have- equal pay, equal pensions, maternity protection etc. And as others say Rape convictions at all time low.
whilst most of these will resolve and improve over time - right now it’s pretty crap.
saying we should be grateful for stuff we fought for or humans developed years ago is nonsense. It is progress and we all have an instinct to expect human civilisation to progress with each generation- it is what drives human endeavours and allows us to survive as a species. Progress is the only thing that’ll allow humans to survive the fallout of global warming.
