Rape as a weapon of war

I am deeply troubled and sickened to hear that rape is being used as a weapon by soldiers in Ukraine. This is not confined to this war either, as it has happened in other conflicts.

What does this say about men that they would make this choice in the context of war?

Our Bodies, Their Battlefield by Christina Lamb is a horrific but important read about how rape is used in war.

Rape of Berlin came to mind.

And so many other mass crimes against women and girls.

Which were never mentioned at all, really. War history is all men fight here and die there. The civilians, not much mention. Even in well documented atrocities, mass murder, ethic cleansing. Rape is... A topic reported strangely.

Sexual violation as a dominating factor has been around forever.

Kidnap/ enslavement of women and girls has been around forever.

Sexual abuse and exploitation by men who have opportunity- whether fighters or peacekeepers.... Ongoing.

Yes of course it's happening.

Yes of course the mainstream news reports mostly about male fighters killed.

I don't see it as a choice as much as a removal of inhibition.
And it says what we already fear, that beneath a thin, easily discarded veneer of civility many, many men are animals.

Yes absolutely! l agree with this! I wonder how many men female soldiers have considered sexually assaulting. Answer = None.

Also it plays to the misogynistic belief women are property and you’re are ‘ruining’ a man’s property.

War does terrible psychological damage to everyone involved, one way or another.

Yes it does, but I think it’s more about the fact rules of society are non existent, essentially murder is allowed, so other morales are then a grey area. As PP said, it’s worrying that when the rules of society are gone, this is what happens.

It’s like that Ricky Gervais sketch when someone asked him as an atheist who doesn’t believe in God’s wrath/consequences, what stops him raping and murdering all he wants? He replied, I do rape and murder all I want, that amount is zero. Some people have no morals and only don’t do bad things because they follow rules, take them away and take a perceived consequence of their action away and you get this.

@Chubarubrub you cannot possibly say that no female soldier has ever considered sexually assaulting someone. We don’t know what every female solider worldwide thinks.
It’s a ridiculous claim that you cannot possibly know the answer to.

Its like saying no mother would harm their child, no nurse would murder a patient etc. it can and does happen.
