Apologies if there has already been a thread about this

It doesn't help that choking women during sex is becoming so normalised, that it's even mainstream pop music played on Radio 2 now (The Weekend - Take my Breath)

Oh my god, I just looked up the lyrics to that song - have heard it on the radio loads but never listened to the lyrics. WTAF?!

And yes, it's another case of a bloke covering up his murderous ways with the 'rough sex' defence. This woman died a while ago didn't she, I remember it in the news at the time?

It's absolutely vile isn't it! And of course in the song, the woman is totally 'asking for it'.

I don't want to be pedantic but we must use the right language. This is fatal or non fatal strangulation. Choking is getting a grape stuck in your airway or similar. Just as we are eventually moving away from 'kiddie porn' to 'sexually abusive images of children' we need to do the same on this very important subject. By doing so it will bring to the fore the significance of the actions perpetrated by another that is so dangerous. In my area of work we have recently introduced a routine question about non fatal strangulation as so many (mainly women) didn't think it was relevant as it has been highly normalised. The positive answers from my client group is around 40%.

You aren't being pedantic. What you have said is valid. I won't use 'choking' from now on. I will use non fatal strangulation, but I will add 'during sex', to make it crystal clear.

Thank you.
