Very odd indeed.

karasviper · 30/08/2021 07:25

Story in the Times about this today. Can’t link sorry but here is an extract:

‘Dave Dawes, a bondage expert who has led workshops in the practice, was suspended last month over the allegations, which also include that he was dismissive of staff concerns about discrimination and included sexual references on his own social media account. He was suspended weeks before the decision to cancel the conference over allegations of sexual harassment which Dawes says are separate.’

A bit more information here about this person.

Shock horror, he’s into “rope bondage” and indeed, runs courses on it.Angry
Hope this link works.

Royal College of Nursing chief denies hostility to women

Apologies X posted.

hopeishere · 30/08/2021 07:52

Yeah but cancelling a whole conference when the person was already being dealt with seems OTT.

NutellaEllaElla · 30/08/2021 08:27

Like, this conference is important, no?? Why on earth cancel it when he can just be removed? I really hate protecting his or the organisations dignity above things that actually matter like the profession of nursing.

KimikosNightmare · 30/08/2021 08:32

Will RCN compensate delegates who have booked advance travel and accommodation which can't be cancelled?

The cheapest options for trains and hotels are always the "no refunds" versions. Many members will be out of pocket.

Apparently he's a "bondage expert" who runs courses. So that's another man in a caring profession openly celebrating his kink - and this one's tying up and restraining people. Grim.

Cailleach1 · 30/08/2021 09:20

How odd that this chappie seems more important than the 465,000 health workers in the organisation, and their conference has to be interfered with because of him.

If he is under investigation, just sideline him until it is completed. Have an acting replacement. Why should the organisation be held hostage and not even take place as was scheduled because of this chappie.

They probably get their costs back anyway. The union will cover all their expenses- travel, accommodation and food. These conferences cost the organisation ££££. Online is way cheaper.

Indeed.

That's irrelevant when money has already been wasted on this one.

Typical, though ...

And also typical that in a female dominated profession, a man takes over - and is almost immediately behaving in a problematic way. There's clearly more to this ...

Archived times link, the comments are interesting;

TooBigForMyBoots · 30/08/2021 12:03

Thanks for the links. I had the same reaction as one of the commentators, read "Bondage Expert" and thought it was a medical traction/bandage thing.Confused But no, it is tying women up.Hmm

Interesting that The Times mentioned it.

happydappy2 · 30/08/2021 12:52

Anyone follow Tara Hewitt on Twitter? Trans woman working in the NHS pushing the ‘inclusive’ narrative, ie not allowing women to have single spaces for women only. This is all going to blow up….the fact that males can be so dismissive of women’s concerns and safeguarding is clear for all to see.

Indeed. Add into this the Trusts insisting that male born sex offenders who self identify as women must be placed in women's hospital wards. I wonder which individuals have influenced these decisions? (hint... it will be those with the red flags waving above their heads).
NiceGerbil · 30/08/2021 20:49

The chairman of the royal college of nursing is openly into rope bondage?

What the actual fuck?

Bring your whole self to work and no kink shaming yay!

That is a wildly inappropriate interest for a man in this position to openly have. I'm properly Shock

NiceGerbil · 30/08/2021 20:51

I still believe it's been cancelled for the reasons I said from the start.

So far I've been on the money let's see how this goes.

Given he already resigned my feeling is that whatever they are looking into about him is either widespread, really awful, or both.

endofthelinefinally · 30/08/2021 20:59

I worked in the NHS my whole career. The male nurses always get fast tracked into the most senior positions. Nothing changes.
Nothing about this surprises me.
I joined the RCN for a while. Absolutely useless.
My rep was a bloke who liked to sit and drink coffee with me but did absolutely nothing useful to help.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 03/09/2021 20:45

I was about to note that the vast majority of nursing union members are women, but there has to be a man at the top as in so many other female-majority organisations. That always irritates me.

Then I read that he leads workshops on bondage. At least he no longer works as a nurse. But my god, who decided he was the best person to lead the nurse’s union?

CircularReasoning · 03/09/2021 22:59

Tara Hewitt (high up equality person in NHS Trust somewhere in the North) seems to have links to Gender GP? I will be watching her with great interest. She seems to have enormous influence and some sort of charismatic hold over the NHS. I will be watching closely.

Is there any further information about why this was suddenly put online?
