Celebrating Women at the Olympics

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 28/07/2021 17:20

Today Charlotte DuJardin won her sixth Olympic medal making her the most decorated female British athlete.

What is remarkable about this is that she competes in one of the few sports where men and women compete on equal terms.

Today for the individual dressage final the podium was full of women. The highest placed man was sixth. The top two horses were female too.

In the team dressage of 9 riders making up the three medal winning teams only two were men. The gold winning team was all female.

Also on the podium was the German Isabell Werth who won an incredible 11th Olympic medal from six games.

A great day for women in sport!

Feel free to add details of other female Olympians who deserve a big feminist cheer!

Awesome work Helen

NiceGerbil · 30/07/2021 23:57

Yes go Helen!I was gutted for them but hey. Final at the Olympics is a massive deal!

CaveMum · 31/07/2021 07:49

More medals!

Gold in the mixed Triathlon for Jessica Learnmouth & Georgia Taylor-Brown (plus Jonny Brownlee and Alex Yee)

Gold in the 4 x 100m mixed medley for Kathleen Dawson and Anna Hopkin (plus Adam Peaty and James Guy)

Bronze in the RS:X Windsurfing for Emma Wilson

Lauren Price is guaranteed a medal of some sort in the Boxing later.

Team GB are still in 1st place after the conclusion of the dressage stage of Eventing. Cross-country tomorrow.

So ridiculously emotional watching charlotte dujardin win her bronze on her 10 year old horse. That's so young for a dressage horse to be competing at the Olympics. She's arguably one of the best riders in the world, and the way she keeps and trains her horses alongside Carl Hester puts the horses well-being front and centre. It's a million miles away from the way horses are usually kept and trained. I love her. And yes to all the top dressage results being women.

Also Simone biles. She's just incredible. My favourite Simone moment was her telling the presenter on dancing with the stars that "smiling doesn't win you gold medals" after he asked her why she wasn't smiling enough.

Charlotte Worthington takes Gold in BMX Freestyle.

Eventing Team still in Gold position after cross country with 18 points in hand over the Australians in second. All 3 of our team are in contention for individual medals sitting in 1st, 3rd and 6th place.

Sunbird24 · 01/08/2021 08:33

Can I add Katie Ledecky from the USA? Only 24 and already the most gold medals of any female swimmer in Olympic history. This is her third Olympics, she was only 15 when she got her first Olympic gold.

ValancyRedfern · 02/08/2021 19:47

Charlotte Worthington was amazing! She did a trick (full somersault with full twist) that no-one has ever done competitively before. Worth a watch if you can find it on I player!

NiceGerbil · 02/08/2021 19:56

In the end I am in awe of all the women competing.

And (most) of the men too!

But being a woman myself watching so many incredible women across the events is just... Gets me you know.

Both our BMX gold women were amazing! And I loved watching both of those competitions so exciting!

And yes. Charlotte's downright insanely good 2nd run was mind blowing. I could watch it over and over!

You could tell that run and the USA woman's first (the one who was expected to stroll to gold) the commentators were totally taken aback in a good way. As a sport where I suspect the women's side is ages behind the men's and less money etc. I think they were expecting a good standard and they I'm sure had decent reasons for that expectation.

With the USA woman and then OMG Charlotte they were just beside themselves! Totally shocked awed amazed impressed overjoyed!

It's a great sport and next time I hope the BMX women racing won't have to crowd fund Hmm I don't know if Charlotte was supported by UK sport or whatever they're called or not.

NiceGerbil · 02/08/2021 19:57

Yes it's on iplayer

CaveMum · 02/08/2021 20:01

Hurrah for Team GB Eventing! Our first team Gold medal in over 40 years.

BeansMeansBeans · 02/08/2021 20:08

The joy on Emily Campbell's face was brilliant - amazing job getting a silver. I think the commentators said that was GB's first female weightlifting medal since the 80s? I was also very proud since she is from Bulwell, a very deprived area of Nottingham. Brilliant to watch her succeed (also loved her hair buns).
All the female heavy weightlifters are so fantastic to watch, it's my favourite event by far. Sarah Robles is a joy - and IIRC, she trained in poverty for London 2012 and has spoken out about the lack of funding the sport gets. So good to watch her continue to succeed and medal 🏅

sandalsinthebin · 02/08/2021 20:31

Thanks for this thread OP it gives me joy. Celebrating all the Women Olympians. Love the Gadirova twins in the Gymnasicts, and Bethany Shriever in bmx - brilliant!

ChattyLion · 02/08/2021 21:44

Fantastic thread. Have loved seeing all the women Olympians compete, it’s been a real joy and made me appreciate women’s sport all the more.

gracelessladyhottramp · 02/08/2021 21:52

Is there a breakdown of medals won by sex? I would love to show the boys at school who say "girls can't ...".

NiceGerbil · 03/08/2021 02:52

If you're a teacher (?) just show them Charlotte Worthington's winning run!

NiceGerbil · 03/08/2021 02:53

BMX freestyle.

Charlotte Worthington takes Gold in BMX Freestyle.

Yes this Was incredible!

Have so enjoyed watching the women at the top of their sport from across the world.

Great thread.

AuntieStella · 03/08/2021 07:44

First time there has been women and men competing together in a mixed team for triathlon relay, and GB won gold.

www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/58035243

We also won gold in the mixed relay swimming - amazing race to watch

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 03/08/2021 15:53

Yesterday we had our first ever female individual gold medalist in the equestrian eventing.

Sadly not our own Laura Collett, although she performs brilliantly and finished well. The winner was the German Julia Krejewski. An amazing performance, she wasn't even expected to make the team having had to retire her best horse and then having had her second horse moved to her male team mate (the defending Olympic champion). A wonderful performance, and an historic result.

Then a first British female weight lifting medal for Emily Campbell

Charlotte Worthington, oh my. How amazing was she? I loved to see the BMX medalists celebrating each other.

Emily Campbell's scream of joy was wonderful. What an amazing achievement.

TheWeeDonkey · 03/08/2021 19:51

Sarah Robles is my new star of Tokyo 2020. 👑 #NoThankYou

Bryonyshcmyony · 03/08/2021 19:54

I must say I took it to mean they they didn't want to discuss LH, why should they, this should be about them

nettie434 · 03/08/2021 20:16

Keely Hodgkinson, Jemma Reekie and Alexandra Bell in the 800m all ran personal bests I think. Keely got a silver and Jemma was an excellent fourth.

CorvusPurpureus · 03/08/2021 20:27

One of my year 11 students is swimming for her country in the artistic swimming, & she's the youngest competitor in the event.

Yalla, Maryam! FlowersSmile

334bu · 04/08/2021 06:24

Bethany Shriever for fantastic gold despite all the odds and Charlotte Worthington for ... Wow!
