Question Time last night: rape

I was astonished at the long rant by the male audience participant who claimed that men get raped far more often than women, and get raped by women too. Fiona Bruce was the only person who tried, gently, to challenge his statements. Male violence is the problem. Technically and legally women cannot rape. I found his anger and aggression towards women very disturbing. The rest of the panel immediately went along with him.

You are not being fair to the panel, Robert Buckland immediately said women can’t rape.

Good. Pleased to hear that.

He is aware of this because Joanna Cherry QC MP made him say it the other day in the HoC.

Cwenthryth · 25/06/2021 15:53

Sounds like an awful man, I missed last night, but saw a tweet Jess Phillips sent which referred to it and wondered what shit had gone down. Shame she wasn’t there to respond!

women can’t rape

Well, more specifically, rape (in English & Welsh law) requires use of a penis. Certainly there are currently convicted rapists being held in women’s prisons in the UK. I do not know the latest statistics, but I would not be surprised at all if there is an increasing number of rape and sexual assaults being recorded as committed by women, as rapists and abusers are able to self-identify whether they are a woman or a man, and be recorded as they prefer.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 25/06/2021 16:07

Well, this was both uninformative but sadly confirmatory of cognitive biases and inflexibility:

littlbrowndog · 25/06/2021 17:16

Yeah in Scotland if you are convicted or charged with rape

You can self identify as a woman.

Police Scotland allow this

So am guessing now. Yes women can be rapistists

TabbyStar · 25/06/2021 17:26

Oh God, don't tell me Caroline Lucas was disappointing (again Sad).

Indeed - that was a very welcome comment. That said it was a spectacular display of "What aboutery"!
GCAcademic · 25/06/2021 18:45

So it was the Tory on the panel who put him right? The Left never fails to disappoint these days.

MotherOffCod · 25/06/2021 20:35

I didn’t see it but it sounds grim.

NiceGerbil · 25/06/2021 21:18

I'm going to watch it, sounds appalling.

NiceGerbil · 25/06/2021 22:38

Watching now.

Men get raped as well, and gay men too!

Gay men aren't men?!

NiceGerbil · 25/06/2021 22:39

Women rape men too!

NiceGerbil · 25/06/2021 22:45

Thing with this is.

It's always anger and not much else.

This one could have been.

There is also an issue with men being raped. It's well known there is a huge reluctance to report.

The dynamics are different than when women are victims and so solutions which are aimed at women only may well not help male victims.

When consideration is being given to how to improve the terrible stats for women, it would be really good to consider male victims as well.

Or similar.

They never say there's this great charity govt could look at working with them.

It's just rant rant bloody women rant rant what about men rant rant women do it too.

KimikosNightmare · 25/06/2021 23:26

Of course it must be- thank heaven Joanna Cherry was there to educate him.

Can't be anything to do with the fact Robert Buckland is also a QC and was Solicitor General for England and Wales for 5 years.

Leaveitonthefloordrobe · 25/06/2021 23:36

I was horrified watching this and shouted at the TV a few times! He was awful and so, so angry that the conversation centred around women.

He also said that men are victims of domestic abuse by women, the only difference being that men don't report it as often as women do. What an absolute load of rubbish.

Fiona Bruce did (more gently the I would have) put him straight.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 26/06/2021 00:15

I was amazed he was given so much time to repeat what he said.

FB did clarify the point, admittedly a bit gently, but she did it 3 or 4 times through increasingly gritted teeth.

Rummikub · 26/06/2021 00:40

I watched this and was appalled by his rant. Shouted and swore at the tv.
Fiona Bruce did eventually correct him and said that overwhelmingly rape affects more women.
The guy was very angry and his face was contorted with his anger. Horrible.

He said that women raping men is a problem.

And this is the giveaway.

He starts off by talking about 'men and gay men'... Which is ???

I think his concern is straight men and so he said and gay men to try to give a bit of an argument.

Gay men get raped by men.

Anyway after a bit we get to the real point.

Women are as bad as men.
Women attack and rape men.
Why do women get all the attention.

I would be willing to put money on him not actively doing anything eg supporting charities for men who are victims of DV or rape.

The theme that comes up over and over is how women get special treatment, men are being done over by feminism, always in the wrong, I'm not s rapist etc etc

The anger is always focussed on insisting women are as bad as men, rather than doing anything productive to help the men they are apparently worried about.

Charities for victims of DV and sexual violence exist.

There was a thread on here recently with this sort of topic. I pointed these charities out to the OP. Had never heard of them. Why should they have to research loads of stuff. I said the sites are direct and clear and you can read about them easily it's not reams of stuff.

OP didn't read them.

Same dynamic as IWD loads of men complaining there's no international men's day. There is. They aren't interested in a men's day. They just hate the focus being on women.

This behaviour is increasing and it's worrying.

Leaveitonthefloordrobe · 26/06/2021 08:51

Exactly NiceGerbil, most men aren't concerned about resources for, or offences against men until there's a conversation about women. It's all just to deflect the conversation away from women.

Rhannion · 26/06/2021 21:26

@endofthelinefinally

It was the complete pathetic response of the panel members that I found so depressing, not just the truly frightening hatred of women.
Pathetic was absolutely the word , shower of spineless idiots. He clearly has issues about women and Fiona should have moved quickly along as he continued to rant.
