In 2019 Elliot Appleyard was convicted of five counts of rape and 10 counts of indecent assault, and sentenced to 20 years. He had treated his 13 year old daughter as if she was his wife.

Miss Higgins reported the abuse to the police in 1985, 2005, 2012, 2014. But her claims were only finally investigated when she complained for a fifth time in 2015.

The Centre for Women's Justice has taken up the case. Miss Higgins is suing for breach of Article 3 of the Human rights Act (the right to live free from torture), and has also lodged a formal complaint of misconduct.

It's terrible, I'm afraid to say though there are some genuinely kind caring officers that want to do the right thing, the police just doesn't seem to be on the victims side in cases like this.

West Yorkshire Police.

Decades of this - what is so badly awry with the culture there and why can't it be corrected?
