Intermittent fasting. How to cope without morning cuppa?

I know that a black coffee is OK - i'm usually a milk and sugar girl!

Need to shift some weight and, having read up this seems like it would suit me and my schedule.

Worried about my morning coffee though 🙈

I still have my morning coffee, with milk and sugar and still lose weight. I just add the calories onto the daily total. It might not be the right way, but for me it makes it doable and more likely to stick to the plan. If it affects weight loss then try reducing gradually?

SockQueen · 30/05/2021 19:45

I got used to plain black coffee very quickly. It's a different taste but I like it now!

MumofPsuedoAdult · 30/05/2021 19:48

I also got used to the black coffee pretty quickly (and I'm a milk and sugar person too). It's just about creating a new habit. Now even on a day when I'm taking a break from fasting (holidays / special occasions) I still start with a black coffee.

I use Alpro no sugars soya. For one coffee in the morning.

Zero carbs so doesn't spike insulin.

Or double cream is 0.5G carbs for 10ml.

NeverHadANickname · 30/05/2021 21:38

I got used to black too and it didn't take long.

Workyticket · 31/05/2021 08:45

Interesting how quickly everyone got used to black coffee!

Going to do some more reading on fasting today and will dabble with a black coffee later in preparation for tomorrow!

Hi Workyticket

I'm exactly the same as you. My "breakfast" had always been my cup of coffee with lots of milk and I thought it would have to go once I started doing IF. I tried black coffee for ages but I hated it and it actually put me off having my morning cuppa, so now I just include my milk allowance for that one cup in my calories for the day. I've cut down on the amount of milk I put into it and I've gotten used to that. It's made no difference weight loss wise and it gets me through to lunch time Smilehope that helps and good luck with this WOL

3kidsareenough · 31/05/2021 12:29

Oh and I changed from skimmed milk (where I used half the carton and it's higher in carbs!) to full fat and only need a little bit with less carbs 😉

Sisisimone · 31/05/2021 12:30

You just add the calories from the milk into your daily allowance

Gwenhwyfar · 31/05/2021 12:33

Black tea and herbal tea on an empty stomach make me feel nauseous so I have plain hot water and have a proper drink for 11ses.
Could you just push your coffee back a half an hour every day until you can wait until the time you want to break your fast.

Gwenhwyfar · 31/05/2021 12:34

No because that would break the fast. Intermittent fasting isn't (or isn't supposed to be) about the calories, but about giving your body time without food or milky drinks. There are people who doubt this science and who think it only works because people generally eat less under IF, but that's not supposed to be how it works.
ny20005 · 31/05/2021 12:39

I suppose it depends why your fasting. I do it to lose weight & have milk & sweetener in morning coffee. As long as I'm within calories, I still lose weight so it works for me

P0gM0Th0in · 31/05/2021 12:42

I have a tiny bit of a Califa vanilla almond milk in mine. It isn’t enough calories or carbs to break the fast apparently and does the job. I switched to oak milk for a bit and I started getting v hungry in the morns; I couldn’t make it to midday to eat anymore. Califa doesn’t seem to affect me.

yeah, but then that's not really IF, just calorie reduction and you might as well eat whenever then.
Gwenhwyfar · 31/05/2021 13:09

Oh sorry, this is 5:2 and not Intermittent Fasting? I thought you were doing IF, but are you just doing some fast days with 500 calories?

Sisisimone · 31/05/2021 13:27

Yes I thought the OP was doing 5:2 Gwenhwyfar
If its IF I would have hot water and lemon until fast broken and enjoy a milky coffee later on

RigaBalsam · 31/05/2021 19:30

I asked Michael M at one of his shows and he said a splash of milk would be fine and not break the fast.

Workyticket · 01/06/2021 09:36

Day 1 - quieter than usual day at work so not an ideal one to start! Have given the box of Ferrero Roche that I had on my desk away though Grin
