Fast 800 and running

LakeFlyPie · 27/01/2021 22:52

I have been running jogging very slowly 5k a couple of times a week since completing C25K a few months ago. Started Fast 800 last week and have tried a couple of runs both of which have been really difficult. Legs feel like lead and had to keep stopping to walk and felt I just didn't have power / energy. I am fasting until lunch and having an evening meal. Tend to run pre evening meal. After the 1st difficult outing last week I tried having a little Greek yog and blueberries mid afternoon and 2 Brazil nuts 30 mins before going out this evening and if anything it was harder.
Any advice would be gratefully received. I'm keen to keep the running going if possible but weight loss over next 10-12 weeks is my priority.

Sometimes those legs-like-lead days do just happen for no logical reason! Have you done any TRE or fasting before? I’ve not had any ill effects from exercising fasted (but, I’m no athlete!) but I guess we all are different.

Could it be mind over matter? As TakeMeToKernow said, sometimes your legs will just feel heavy.

Could you run first thing, before lunch? I run up to 8 miles fasted first thing in the morning, before my energy has dwindled through the working day.

I've been loosely doing 20:4 since August and now love running in fasted state. Often run in the morning, usually break fast around 4pm. I haven't found it an issue, though have built up length/stamina of both fast and running over time. Did a (slow) half marathon distance over Xmas and felt great! So definitely can be done but if you're starting out on both diet and running more I'd expect it'd take some time to adjust, just take it slowly and listen to your body :-)

Thanks for the replies, maybe was a couple of bad runs after less frequent running during the icy weather.
Will give it another go tomorrow.

I had one of those flippin runs right after posting Confused it’s like I predicted it! An out and back of less than 5k and found myself having to walk up a hill on the return 🤦‍♀️

Sorry to hear it Takeme, I almost feel responsible Grin

Lol, LFP I genuinely did think about you as it was happening!!

Although, after continuing to feel sluggish, I used one of the Ketosis-pee-test-sticks and got the highest reading I’ve had Shock I’m embracing rye bread tomorrow, so will see if that lowers the ketones and ups energy.

I cannot run fasted. It doesn't work for me at all. Especially if my period is due/just started. I might manage ok another day, if I was well hydrated and had eaten well the day before. The day you ate the yogurt before running, how long before running was it? I'd have to leave it at least an hour or I'd feel quite sick, especially when I first started.

Haven't attempted another run but did 30 day Shred session this morning and it was fine (well it was hard but didn't get the leaden, lacking power feeling in my legs) so may stick with walks, Shred and yoga whilst I do 12 weeks of Fast 800 and then planning to go onto 5:2 so could revisit running on the days I have some carbs and see what happens.
Teadrinker I had the yogurt about 90 mins before run and it was only a couple of spoonfuls so didn't cause a problem, I usually run on an empty stomach but will have had a couple of meals containing carbs during the day (usually run just before evening meal)

Rye bread (with eggs) was fine and I did have a FAB run after it.

BUT the lethargy yesterday may have been the prodome phase of a migraine (only learnt that was even a thing today). Had an aura migraine while making dinner, so will be drawing a line under the fast 800 diet today, after a 6lb loss in a week. I’ll continue TRE and occasional fasting but on a higher calorie and less carb restricting diet incase the diet change has been the trigger.
