Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

Is 16:8aseqsy as it sounds?

I want to start tomorrow. I've done 5:2 successfully in the past, but I've been advised not to fast for whole days anymore due to medication.

Is it as simple as eating in the 8 hour window? Presume it needs to be fairly sensible eating.

Have a nice supper
wake up and have a black coffee or a herbal tea
have a light lunch
have a decent supper
= 16 - 8

It worked nicely for me before I was pregnant.
I would get up, not have breakfast, head off for work, drink black tea and water until lunch, notmal family tea time and then nothing after 7pm.
I had my window 11-7pm so I would break my fast with a milky coffee at 11, but by closing my window at 7pm I essentially stopped all mindless evening snacking which was my downfall.

It has worked well for me, but the reason it works is because you are consuming less calories. If you have a cut off time, you are less likely to snack and pick at things which adds up to a lot of extra calories.

Thanks (sorry for weird typo in title!).

I have had a cup of tea with a tiny dash of milk this morning, maybe ill ease myself into black tea.

I might just have breakfast at 11 and not lunch as breakfast is my favourite meal!

@BreathlessCommotion

I find it relatively easy but it's good to have a flexible approach so if one weekend you want to start your eating window earlier or later then it's absolutely fine.
I love breakfast too and and once in a while I have brunch or a bowl of cereal as a snack!
I do a clean fast with black coffee and water only during fasting. Having a dash or milk is ok but may not give you the full health benefit of a clean fast. Come join us in the 16/8 support group Smile

It’s working great for me. I sometimes log my calories for the day on MFP and I usually come under 1200/1500 cals. I never used to eat breakfast anyways so the morning fasting is easy. It was the late night wine/snacking that was my downfall so stopping at 7pm, I’ll have a sleepy tea ahah and an early night (and no wine!) and I’ve lost 8lb in 3 weeks.

BreathlessCommotion · 08/11/2020 12:34

I've lost a lb this week. I'm thinking I might combine it with 5:2. So 2 days fasting and the other days 16:8.

I had some Greek yoghurt to break my fast at 11. I'm hungry and want lunch, but can't think of what to have that isn't bread or crap. Years of dieting means I'm fed up of salad and soup.

I tried it for a month and didn't lose any weight. I must have still been eating too many calories. Although this was when I was studying and working full time

I find it very easy, but (for me anyway) it's not the best for weightloss. I've lost two stone in 3 months quite comfortably with 19/5, sometimes 20/4 and other times 18/6 depending on hunger. In that I have one good meal and a snack. In the fasting window I have nothing but black tea or coffee, or water. That was honestly the hardest bit to get used to.
