Blood Sugar Diet and period issues

I started the BSD in February and over the first 6 weeks I lost 9kg. I stopped calorie counting and have maintained the loss with still following the basic principles. I am the-starting tomorrow as I have another 15-20kg to lose.

However, two weeks in to the diet in February I had the most horrendous period which lasted two weeks. From then on my periods started coming every two weeks, then each week for the past 8 weeks so I pretty much have an almost non-stop period.

I went to the GP who referred me for an ultrasound which I have just had and it was completely normal. The GP said if it’s normal then she would recommend the Mirena coil as it’s probably a hormonal imbalance caused by the Desogestrel pill. She knows I was following the BSD and lost weight quickly but seems uninterested in a link to these period disturbances.

Has anyone had long-term period issues following low-carb? I seriously can’t live like this.

I can't really see how your irregular periods are related to your diet tbh. Correlation is usually not causation.

as it’s probably a hormonal imbalance caused by the Desogestrel pill
But surely that's your answer rather than the BSD - I can't think of how this could be related to the diet, especially after only two weeks into it. Hope you can get sorted quickly, sounds like you've been having a horrible time x

I've done BSD for several years now, and it does do odd things to my cycle. For example, if you lose lots of fat quickly it can disrupt your oestrogen levels. I did a very strict week keto a few weeks ago and my period is now 6 days late- although I think this may be a combination of increased exercise in July, switching to soy milk, and very low carb.

Sorry, posted too soon! However, a constant period doesn't sound like it should be a symptom of the diet, maybe you have an underlying condition (eg pcos?)- I once, years ago, had a similar issue with the depo provera jab which caused me to bleed for the entire duration of the treatment. I sympathise, it's really unpleasant.

If anything, BSD should help regulate your periods over time, but maybe the hormone in your pill is not right for you.

Being LCHF has the same effect on me.

A mirena has helped but took 6 months to settle in. The 5 stone weight loss was worth it.
