Vasectomy- worried it will change sex life

My husband has agreed to have a vasectomy so that I can stop taking contraception as I have done our whole relationship.

However I am worried it something going wrong and the vasectomy changing our sex life! I've read mostly that it doesn't have an affect on sex drive or erections but then I have stumbled across articles which say it can lead to ED and lower libido.

Has anyones partner had the procedure done and can you shed light on this for me?

I’ve heard there’s risks. But I dated someone who had one and he had a very high sex drive so it didn’t affect his.

@Magamom thanks. This is my worry. Our sex life has just started to get back on track after having children and I don't want to affect that.

I had mine done years ago, didn't affect sex drive one bit.

It changed mine for the better with my late husband as we weren't terrified of pregnancy any more and I could stop taking libido-killing hormones. But anecdote isn't data. Do you feel your partner understands the risks and benefits? If he is happy to proceed, try to trust that it's his body.

No problems here. Probably improved the sex life as there's a lot more freedom when you don't have to worry about birth control and pregnancy.

There are always risks, but the odds are high of it helping your sex life, not hindering. Knowing you can’t get pregnant and no longer worrying about birth control is incredibly freeing.

My first husbands libido dropped massively after his vasectomy. Second husband had heard this was a side affect so refused to have one so we used condoms (I'd been on the pill for years and didn't want to go back on it). The chances are minuscule though.

i like condoms best; even if a man gets a vasectomy there’s still cum that is released and I prefer no clean up after sex.

This was my major worry too! My husband had the procedure in March and I was so concerned it would change his desire or his erections but I can categorically say it’s the same!

Holly485 · 31/05/2025 19:45

DH had one, really improved our sex life as no longer worrying about pregnancy.

My husband had his vasectomy early last year and both of us were worried about the procedure for the same reasons, particularly his libido and erections. We haven't seen any change at all to this and it has improved things knowing that we don't have to worry about getting pregnant.

For about 3 months after the procedure he did say that his balls just felt 'fuller' than before and he had started masturbating regularly again to get relief from this. Not sure if it was some kind of placebo effect but he says this seems to have gone away now.

My husband had a vasectomy after we had our daughter (his only child). Definitely taken stress away and I am so, so much better off the pill (especially mental health wise). Feel free basically. Zero regrets 😀
Personally think it is a bit selfish of men once the family is complete not to get one if the expectation is his partner having to be on hormonal contraceptives long-term which of course all have risks and side effects.

Arrestedforit · 23/06/2025 23:28

Apologies to anyone who recognises me in real life, but in my experience our sex life went through the roof!
Happy memories 😁 And then perimenopause, serious illness and widowhood 😟

Oops ZOMBIE thread

lilacbreeze · 23/06/2025 23:31

I was with a boyfriend who had it done a year into our relationship (his choice and I didn’t mind as I don’t want children) I’m afraid to say it totally changed his sex drive and he broke up with me over a year on as he knew it wasn’t what I signed up for. Whether this was due to the vasectomy or not I have no idea. We are still good mates now 5 years on (I’m with someone new) however while he has crushes on women his sex drive just seemed to drop after the op. He is considering reversal

everychildmatters · 24/06/2025 11:16

No idea how it can cause a drop in libido as doesn't change hormones!!
