Depo contraception failure - don’t know which form of contraception to trust!

My depo injection recently failed. I have never had a late injection (my medical records at GP confirm this). I am no longer pregnant, but I now do not trust my body or contraception at all, and am not sure what my next steps are. I have tried to talk to GP/nurse about this, and all they can say is that the contraceptive injection “doesn’t fail” and that I’m one of the unlucky tiny percentage who uses the method correctly and still get pregnant, and they can’t really advise. In theory, my current injection is ‘valid’ until June...

I guess I’m wondering what my best option is... I’m not keen on a coil. Am I just going to have to use all the contraceptives at once for ever?? My husband will consider vasectomy, but waiting lists are long in our area.

Can you do “belt and braces” method whilst you wait for a vasectomy appointment. This means using two forms of contraception to be doubly sure.

Eg pill + condoms
Depo +condoms
Implant +condoms
Pill + fertility tracker

It depends how long is a long wait for dh to have the op because obviously there is the time after to wait for checking. If you’re talking 2/3 months then maybe pill and another top up method. If you’re talking a 6/8 + wait maybe implant / depo again with the addition of a barrier method or fertility tracking.

As you’ve realised, no contraceptive is 100% effective. So I would also belt and braces and use 2 types.

I think that’s going to have to be the way forward and wait for the vasectomy. I guess I know that - I’m just voicing my frustration really. Especially because the health professionals have basically shrugged and said “this never happens!”

Yes. I think that’s the way forward. I never thought when they say over 99% percent effective I’d be the less that 1%, although logically I know somebody is!

It’s frustrating isn’t it. Be nice if you could be the 1 or 2% that won big on the lottery instead!
