Mirena Coil fitted a month ago and no bleeding at all?

I had a mirena IUD fitted a month ago for contraception and a precursor to starting HRT. Usually have a period every 21 ish days, sometime shorter or longer as I'm peri menopausal. The fitting was done mid period, all calmed down after a few days.

I waited 7 days before having sex. I was expecting spotting and still to have a period, but nothing, it's 30 or so days now, just the faintest hint of spotting once or twice.

I'm freaked out, I've done two pregnancy tests, both negative, thank fuck. Most people I speak with complain of spotting and random bleeding for months. I know it can stop periods but I thought that was a gradual thing?

I did have a really bad does of thrush last week and took the tablet but all good now.

What's goign on? I have felt heavy and really crampy for the last few days but still nothing.

I haven’t had a period/bleed/spot since the moment I got my first Mireya 23 years ago-it’s fantastic!

@JudgeRindersMinder oh wow, that's impressive! Did you still get cramps and feel like you were having a period? That seems to be what's happening here... It weirdly unnerving.

I had the Mirena through my 30s and zero pain or bleeding, although I can't remember how quickly that happened after it was put in.

Why would you bleed if you have a Mirena coil? That’s the whole point. Did the doctor actually talk to you about it?

JudgeRindersMinder · 20/06/2021 08:36

With the first one I had really bad cramps -literally like labour pains-for the first couple of weeks but then it calmed right down, but I haven’t had that issue with subsequent ones as it’s just been a straight replacement.

I’ve had Mirena coils for 13 years and have very rarely had any bleeding. Sometimes I’ve had some cramps and sore breasts but only very occasionally have a bit of (generally) brown blood.

Some people do bleed and some don’t. Think it’s luck of the draw.

Thanks all, the doctor explained that there was a possibility that bleeding would stop eventually but it'd be gradual and to prepare for heavy/irregular periods and spotting for a few months. I assumed I'd have this as my womb is usually a twat, but who knows. Hopefully these cramps will settled down soon, they are quite uncomfortable this afternoon, I will speak to the doctor again if not I guess....

Have had mirenas for over 15 years now and have never had more than the odd bit of spotting in all that time. Before I had one I used to flood for four days a month to the point I had to carry a change of clothes around with me.

Well the cramps have gone and I feel fine and dandy today, I can only assume I was having some sort of period cramps sans any actual bleeding.

That’s good news-glad you’re feeling better 🙂
