Mirena 'run out' but GP says will be ok for a few months....

So my Mirena officially ran out in Feb and the GP sent me for scan as lost my strings.
It's still there and I have appt to replace next week
Gp said I would be fine contraceptive ly but said I could take Cilest as well if I felt happier. I have been and in 6 weeks I be put on half a stone, and feel moody. Want to stop taking it but don't want to get pregnant!
Was the GP correct when she said it was fine to rely on expired Mirena.....

My mirena expired in Dec, no nurse or doctors at our surgery that can replace until May. I am fine so far and was told it would be ok too!

The chances are it's absolutely fine. The expiry date means it delivers the right amount of hormone until at least that date, not that it suddenly stops. They can be OK for quite some time beyond the specified duration. And of course having any coil has a contraceptive effect in itself.

But as the delivery of effective hormone levels cannot be 100% guaranteed by manufacturer beyond a certain point, you will not find a qualified HCP giving professional advice that it is OK. Even if they privately think it is.

Mine was nearly two years overdue, it's ok. My gp told me that 'unofficially' it's about 6+ years.

To be honest, I would be careful. The coil isn't 100% effective and would be slightly less effective than normal as the hormone runs out.

Could you use condoms? No nasty side effects for you.

I think they are licensed for 7 years in parts of Europe. I've had mine in for 6. GP is happy to leave it in for another year by which time I will be 53.

just realised from reading this that mine has been in for 6 years. Ooops.

my strings disappeared years ago so I'm a bit nervous about the fishing expedition to get it out

So relieved to see the comments here as just this morning I received a letter from GP saying mine is 3 months past 5 year mark. It got me very worried as I'm very happy with my two DCs and wasn't intending to have more
