Mirena coil - how painful to have fitted?

I have a mirena coil to treat endometriosis and am due to have my current one replaced.

I was advised by my previous consultant that it would be too painful to have it fitted without a general anaesthetic because I have never been pregnant or given birth.

So the first coil was fitted in a private hospital under my private healthcare policy and then five years later they authorised and covered the cost of the replacement.

I've phoned the insurance company today and they won't cover me anymore! Change of policy apparently.

Anyway my GP has said that the NHS won't do it under anaesthetic so I will just have to have it fitted at the family planning clinic.

So - how much will it hurt?Blush

At the GPs surgery it hurt quite a bit.

At the family planning clinic it was much better :)

Thanks for the reply. After further discussion my GP has now agreed to refer me to the hospital to discuss having it fitted under general anaesthetic. I'll keep my fingers crossed that that the consultant agrees to do it.

I had mine done two weeks last Tuesday and felt a very weird sensation but not painful as such. I have had three children though. I did feel a bit crampy after but nothing major.

I'm sure I've heard of people having them fitted under general on the nhs! I

I had mine fitted pre baby and passed out from the pain - i'm a woman who falls asleep during tattoos and went down on the floor like a brick!

didn't feel much at all. In fact I can't even remember having both done.
