Mirena - how much longer will I have to put up with this?

I had a iud inserted 6 weeks ago due to the promised no/light periods. I've bled every day since then - more than spotting, think day 3/4 of a period. I'm also starting to get really spotty. I had a check up after 4 weeks and everything was fine, with my GP informing me that bleeding for up to 3 months is normal Hmm. To be honest, 3 months of constant bleeding doesn't really offset lighter periods for 5 years! I suppose that it's working very well as a contraceptive but not really in the way I want Wink.

So, when will it get better? Please someone tell me it'll be soon! Grin

I didn't bleed at all with mine for over 70 days after it was fitted.
Then had a light period. Then they got lighter and lighter and stopped after 18m. No spots, well v occasionally, but a hairier lip for sure.

Everyone's experiences are different, if you are not happy take it out.

I saw my gp for this reason today. She told me some women have it for 6months. I will not be happy if that is the case.

I had mine at the begining of jan and have had one bleed free day since then.

It did get lighter an less crampy but I now have the heaviest period I have had in years Hmm

I'm hoping that after this the bleeding will stop and stay away for a while.

I've also had bad spots. I did have them before the coil though and am now on anti-biotics.

The bleeding I had when it was put in went on for 16 weeks.

I hated the Mirena, I only lasted 7 or 8 months before I had it removed because of the side effects.

Was seriously considering the mirena but not convinced now! Will be following this thread.

I was warned that the spotting could last up to 6 months. It did, but it was absolutely worth it. Havent ever had another period. Wonderful.

Oh no, really?! I don't want to give up on it just yet, it feels a bit soon, but I had been warned about spotting, not this constant slow flow Sad

Mine did become spotting after a couple of months, but the spotting carried on for a while. Have to say I think its the best thing ever. Not a moment's trouble with it, and I can barely remember that early bleeding bit now, so definitely a price worth paying Smile

I didn't bleed at all after fitting, and haven't had a period...I love it.

Sorry OP...my experience is of no use to you, but I wanted to add my positive situation for others interested in iud.

I am in the same situation. I hate it and want it out. I was supposed to have an appointment with the nurse today to check it and discuss it, but it was cancelled which has just reduced me to tears.

What makes it worse is that it is out of my control, not like the pill that you can just stop taking.

As well as the fact that this means I have only had 3 bleed free weeks in the last 17 since I had my son.

Mighty fed up. I trout today at least I could talk to someone about it and now I can't. Sad

I know. I had my first period since dd2 the week before it went in, so I've been bleeding for 7 weeks now. And I haven't even been able to use my mooncup (although I believe I can from tomorrow when it's 6 weeks exactly post insertion) and wearing pads for all this time is making me very itchy Sad. I've also woken up with more spots Sad. I had high hopes for the coil, my GP raved about it. I'm not sure how long to persevere before I admit defeat.

My GP totally convinced me too as I had really severe PMT and
my periods were every 2 weeks which was driving me insane. I was assured that the Mirena would stop the bleeding and therefore stop the hormonal problems causing PMT. After it was inserted I totally panicked after I read all sorts of terrible side affects on other websites - I noticed that I was feeling hungry all the time and I did put on weight very quickly and my face got quite hairy!! At first I had a week of light bleeding and then it stopped - for a week and then started again - this went on for about 7 weeks - after the 3rd week I had a really bad/heavy bleed with alot of blood clotting which convinced me that the coil had slipped out of place - I had it checked and it was still in place and the Dr. advised that the heavy bleeding happened around the time I would have had a normal period. I booked another appointment for a month afterwards but a week before the appt. the bleeding stopped. It stopped for 2 weeks - although one day I had some cramping pains no bleeding - then a few days later I had sore boobs and then a few days later the bleeding started but it's incredibly light - have to wear a pantyliner but it's annoying. I was warned that spotting can happen up to 6 months (or lighter periods) but I am determined to get past the 6 months and see how it all goes. I don't believe that I will have another one inserted after 5 years though. Everyone is affected in different ways - I've read some women who think it's great until just 18 months and then it seems to go downhill - others just after 4 years and then some have been fine and gone back several times to have the old one removed and new ones fitted. I think I would have been put off had I known in advance all the possible side affects but I was feeling so desperate and the GP really did talk it up.

I bled pretty much for 10months before I had it took out and that's not all, I couldn't lose weight no matter how much I dieted and exercised. I was low and argumentative. So I'm so glad to have it out now :) some people it works wonders for and then some people it's just a nightmare. I read somewhere that it can be like an open wound and just constantly irritate it so that you constantly spot/bleed

Don't give up on it yet! I bled on and off for 6 months and I had other symptoms too, like cramping pains, and I could feel it inside sometimes - I could actually feel it touching the sides of my womb! Made me wonder if the Dr had used the right size. Also, my partner can feel it during sex in certain positions, and I can feel it on those occasions too.

Despite all of that, soon after I'd had it for 6 months I forgot about it. I have regular but lighter periods, and love that I don't have to worry about contraception anymore. I've had it for 11 months now and think it's brilliant - so convenient! I was hoping my periods would stop altogether, but we've decided to ttc in a couple of years so now I think I'd like my periods to stick around just for reassurance.

Anyway, bottom line is, stick it out - even if you have rubbish symptoms for the first six months it's worth it in the long run.
