If you are in your 40s, what contraception do you use?

Have never been able to take any form of pill, so have always relied on condoms/withdrawal. However, just had to take a morning after pill due to an accident, even though pregnancy is unlikely. If you're in your 40s, what do you use? Just looking for some ideas and opinions thanks.

I use a snipped husband!

monsterchild · 28/11/2012 15:31

we used condoms up until we decided to TTC. (I was 39). Will likely go back to condoms after the baby! Condoms have worked for me for about 15 years, so I trust them! And they don't require anyone getting surgery or hormones or remembering to take a pill. (not my strong suit)

Horsemad · 29/11/2012 09:22

Diaphragm - easy to use and doesn't give me horrible PMT symptoms like the pill does. You can put it in upto 3 hrs before sex, so it doesn't have to kill the moment getting 'prepped' Smile

whizmum · 29/11/2012 16:11

I used combined pill, until my doctor declared me unfit to use it! (history of migraines with aura - it is this year's pill scare) so now I am on cerazette, which I am not convinced is all that much better, and gives me constipation :(

Lifeisontheup · 29/11/2012 16:24

Implanon implant- for me it means no periods which is a bonus as mine seemed to be constant.

somewheresomehow · 29/11/2012 16:31

I've been clamped Grin

safflower · 29/11/2012 16:31

nothing.

SageMist · 29/11/2012 18:43

Snipped DH.

cantfindamnnickname · 29/11/2012 19:18

pill despite being 36 Dr assessed everything and said i was still ok to carry on

CocktailQueen · 29/11/2012 19:22

condoms :( Miss beign on the pill but don't want to go back on at my age. Have suggested the snip to dh but he's not keen.

TheFuzz · 03/12/2012 10:07

I am a DH, wife was on pill, then condoms for a year and now I'm snipped. I am not surprised some men aren't keen, I've had nothing but problems since and am in a serious amount of constant pain. I am also a keen sports person (cyclist), and this has messed this up completely.

Working great as contraception as I'm in that much pain I sleep on the couch/settee. Popping loads of pain killers. Unfortunately there is little or no support for men with on going issues, certainly nothing from the NHS - go away !

This is supposed to be a simple operation, with very few side effects, BUT there is a 10%-15% risk of long term pain - which is fluffed over by medical experts, despite being asked ! Operation didn't go too well eaither as the surgeon made a mess of the second 'part'.

AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 03/12/2012 10:10

vasectomy

it worked great for us

TheFuzz...go back to your GP and demand that you get referred to a specialist. You shouldn't have to live with pain.

ElectricSoftParade · 03/12/2012 10:13

Early menpause Sad.

nananaps · 03/12/2012 10:13

ElectricSoftParade · 03/12/2012 10:14

Early menopause [dim]

BarbieDahl · 03/12/2012 10:16

Mirena coil. I'm 47 and have had it for 4 years now. I was on the pill before and my only regret is not having it fitted sooner.
No periods and no side effects, but having it fitted was a bit painful.

vodkaanddietirnbru · 03/12/2012 10:21

I'll be 40 next year and got the mirena coil this year so will still have it in my 40's (lasts 5 years)

MrsJohnDeere · 03/12/2012 13:51

Currently condoms.

Can't have the coil, pill, implants, sterilisation until I get the all clear for cancer. Sad

Withdrawal method ended up in pregnancy #3 for me (later miscarried)

BarbaraBar · 03/12/2012 13:55

DH had a vasectomy after I got pregnant when I had the coil (miscarried).

So pleased he did - it's made a huge difference.

SrirachaGirl · 03/12/2012 13:56

The pill (I'm 36). I love it and my Dr. says it's ok to continue until menopause.

Vasectomy!
And also prem menopause.

weegiemum · 03/12/2012 13:59

Vasectomy followed the conception of dd2, 9 last week, while I had a mirena!

pepperrabbitinapeartree · 03/12/2012 14:00

Dh had the snip, week of discomfort then fine.
TheFuzz, really think you need to see the GP or another one if yours isn't helping.

derekthehamster · 03/12/2012 14:00

I'm 40 next year, and am on the pill. I shan't change it whilst there are no problems.
