When to start pill if no clear start to period?

After 10 yrs off I have recently decided to start taking the pill again (yasmin). I know I'm supposed to start my first pack on the first day of my period. My problem is I have erratic periods that stop and start for about a week prior to starting properly. I've had the tiniest amount of spotting for two days now but know this could stop tomorrow before bleeding starting again heavily in a few days. I decided to take my first pill this morning. If I just ensure I use additional contraception for the next 7 days should I then be OK? Confused

I do realise I should have asked my gp this at the time but I actually went in about acne and the contraceptive side of things was somewhat of an afterthought, killing two birds with one stone as it were!
