Does anyone else feel like they were 'mis-sold' the mirena??

Dear All,

Had my Mirena since July 09, so thats 14 months now.

The Dr and Nurse were very pro, your periods will stop, it's fab - blah blah.

No one mentioned my periods actually might not stop.

I have had a period on and off (and that's more on than actually off) for the past 14 months.

Am having a scan next week to check I haven't got fibriods but to be honest I just want the thing out now.

Do you feel that your Mirena Coil was 'mis-sold' to you too??

I'm starting to feel like that, girlsmum. Have only had my Mirena two weeks, but wasn't informed of the constant bleeding and cramping. I've read online advice to give it 3 to 6 months..

Hi ladies I've persevered with mine for 18 months now ( though I think it's responsible for crap skin and weight gain and sore/bigger boobs)and I bled for first six months, more or less. Get no bleeding at all now-I think that's the only advantage though!Why is there never a perfect contraception invented?

No personal experience at all, but isn't there something about GP's getting paid inflated sums to fit & thereafter maintain these things?

Similar here - no other side effects (except HORRENDOUS pain for a good few weeks after) except the longer it's in, the longer my periods get!? It's getting to the point now where 3 weeks of the month I'm either due on or bleeding...not nice.

i had the same problem lizzyloola blood tests scans the works so i just (yes me my doctor couldnt find it ) took the bloody thing out everything went back to normal mirena is the work of the devil guess it works though as i dont think i had sex more than twice while i was on it so no chance of getting pregnant!

you took it out yourself? How was that? the doctor who put mine in told me that if I was dextrous I could do it myself, but everything I've read since says 'NOOOOOO'!

Mine came half out the day I had it put in. I rang the OOH Dr and he told me to pull it out myself. Couldn't do it so had to go to hospital.

No experience either. But I decided to try either a Mirena or a copper coil and had pretty much decided on copper because Implanon hadn't agreed with me.

Two of the GPs at the surgery tried to hard-sell me the Mirena, insisting that as the hormone is local rather than systemic, I'd be fine.

I had a chat to the nurse who initially suggested Mirena, but as soon as I mentioned that Implanon had disagreed with me, she sucked her cheeks and advised me to go with copper.

I found it to be an interesting Nurse vs GP point of view! (and have gone for copper)

I think it is wonderful - am on my second one - not all contraceptives suit all women so would hardly call it the work of the devil!!!

I took mine out last night. We want to start trying for a baby NOW but I was so fearful/annoyed about going to a doctor, so I just found the strings and it was a fiddly job but I managed to grasp them and it slipped out easily - no pain and no blood - feel much better! Really, pulling it out is all a doctor does, except they'll use tools and won't be able to feel what's going on which is probably what makes it uncomfortable.

I know people are more likely to report bad experiences but if you google mirena there is soooo much bad stuff out there about it! It is obviously cheaper to maintain than the pill, so I guess GPs 'push' it. I had mine taken out 2 yrs ago, and the GP is still trying to pursuade me back on! Ditto all the symptoms - turned me into a monster AND when I decided to have it taken out, it had imbedded and I had to endure a humiliating and excruciating 45 mins to get it wrenched out by a specialist gynae. I am deeply suspicious of it - I went from clear to severe pre cancer smear test in three years, coinciding with Mirena being fitted. Was clear on HPV and have been with same partner 14 yrs. Too right they are mis selling it. It will be interesting to see how it pans out over the next 20 years or so.

I didn't realise my sex drive was affected by it, I just thought I'd got a bit old or something hehe - greatly improved since taking the coil out!!

Hi Ladies!! I am due to get a mirena coil fitted on the 21st of this month! I know a couple of girls have had it at work and sing its praises but am a bit wary....?! I only had my baba in Feb and I think Im more concerned with having to go through any unnessesary pain getting it inserted...eeks!! Now that I have read the above comments I'm worried that it may not be the best choice?!

I've had a terrible experience with the Mirena coil, and it was the worst thing I've had done! I had a copper coil for 6 yrs and it was fine - I had to have it changed this year as it was a yr over due for a change and I was persuaded to have a mirena coil. What a mistake! I bleed for 4 months solid, had terrible cramps, mood swings and I felt like I had a huge black cloud over my head.

I had he damn thing out this week and I am so relieved and amazed at the difference. I had my first day of not bleeding today and its been lovely. I am hoping my iron levels will get back to normal now. I've been on iron and folate for the past month.

So my advise is to try it and if it suits you then hay great - but if its not making you happy then speak up. Don't leave things to plod along! I waited too long. They are not suited to everyone!

I have the Mirena coil fitted and it has been nothing but trouble, worst thing i ever had done, my periods are all over the place, i kept going back to the doctors but they didnt seem to want to know, then they put me on the mini pill as well as the coil, to see if it made any difference, and guess what it did........i bled everyday instead.........so useless im going to have mine taken out.

My sister had one and it was a nightmare. I'm on my second and it's been brilliant both times - perhaps it's just a case of trying it to see?

I managed to take the first one out by myself, but am going to have this one removed by the nurse next week as the strings are too short for me to get hold. First one was exceptionally painful to have fitted, second one (post DD) I was expecting to be awful and it was in before I noticed.

I had one and hated it. Because it's hormonal its side effects vary hugely. I should have suspected I'd have a nightmare with it as I stopped being able to take the pill from age 28 (pre-kids).

I had the mirena fitted when I was 30 and no-one at the FPC or GP surgery told me it might affect my future fertility, although I found out afterward that it is not a good idea to have one if you think you might be ttc within 2 years of having it fitted.

I was on it for a year: throughout that time I had very erratic spotting and bleeding; could never predict when so had to wear pant liners most of the time. I put on weight and the mood swings were awful. I had it taken out in the January and then didn't have a period for 11 months. the month before I finally came on, I truely thought I was pregnant and took about 3 tests as my boobs were permanently sore and I felt sick.

Some people are fine with it and get their periods back within a month or 2; others are like me and have a 'mare!

and btw, at the poster who took it out yourself. I'm surprised you didn't turn yourself inside out

Poppy I do think you have to remember that for people whose Mirena is working fine, they are probably much less likely to say something about it on here.

Mine has literally changed my life (for the better). No side effects other than the chaotic bleeding of the first 6 months which I was warned of in advance. Oh and I weigh a stone and a half less than when it was put in, so its not necessarily true about it causing weight gain either. No periods now at all. Wonderful.

oneof - the only difference when the nurse takes it out is that she uses a speculum to hold the vagina open - other than that they just get hold of the strings and pull too (I know this because I had my second one out this week and asked the nurse what she was doing!).

I had my first one removed, bled a couple of days later and was pregnant that month. Full term no probs. Fully sympathise with those it doesn't work for, but it's not always the work of the devil.

I had the marina coil in for 2 years, first 6months alot of bleeding which was light but happened alot. after about 8months started getting bad skin. then after 2years i went for a scan which showed i had PCOS, which i didnt have before having the coil inserted as had a scan before i had it put in.

so i have taken it out now, i think my skin is slighty better now, but still not great
