How and where did you find your piano teacher?

DS (6yrs) wants to learn piano, but I'm not sure how to go about finding a teacher.

He's been on the school waiting list for ages (at least 18 months), and there is no sign of a place coming available any time soon. I've also put his name down for other less popular instruments, although most of those are woodwind and apparently require him to be at least 7 before starting. Piano is his instrument of choice.
Is it worth asking if the school piano teacher does private tuition? Or are they generally "school only" tutors?

Also I have yet to obtain a piano. We have several local piano dealers/music shops, but should I wait and find a teacher first and seek their advice on the piano purchase?

Argh. Sorry, this wasn't supposed to be so long!
