Talk to me about football boots

DS1 just started after school football, he is 5. He is desperate for football boots and I am guessing they are a good idea as they will be playing outside all winter, so looking online and v confused. what type does he need, ones with proper studs or just bumpy fixed stud thingies?

Don't think mine used proper boots at 5, but shinpads were compulsory. At that age I would let him choose....from the cheapest in the range!

Thanks, was definitely going for the cheap option, but v few palces seem to do them small enough (size 11)

Mine are all much bigger 16,14,&12 now.

I'm sure I remember buying them at Asda/Tesco not sure if they still stock them.

I have an 8 year old who can tie a bow but in boots, he just can't get it tight enough yet and the boots flop around on his feet. These locking laces are BRILLIANT!

It's the thin end of the wedge at 5 - give it a couple of years and if they get into football enough to join a club they'll probably be wanting astroturf boots (trainer type soles) for training, blades or short moulded stud boots for hard ground and metal studs for soft ground! I'd go for moulded blades for now.

Check with whoever is running the after school football first - the type of surface they are playing on makes a big difference in what they should wear.

Just realised that you might not know what "blades" are - sort of elongated shape protrusions rather than round ones - like these. And I'd go for velcro rather than laces if possible. The ones I linked too would probably be a good bet if you've got a Decathlon store anywhere near you.

I'd go for moulded studs or blades, whichever are cheaper. I would also try to get him to the shop, boot sizes seem to be all over the place.

Anything from a 1 to a 3 seems to fit DS, depending on style. And don't forget thick socks and the heel/insole cuff of the shin pads can make a difference

Oh I love Mumsnet, thanks for advice. Is playing on school field. Guess I need socks too then! He ahs some shin pads as were given them by a friend, but the boots she gave us arte too big!
