Do lefthanders need a left handed guitar or can they manage on an ordinary one.
DD is going to have lessons when she starts secondary in September.

Also any advice on buying a first guitar.

you just get a normal guitar and turn it round and re-string it

She may find it easier to be the same way round as everyone else to copy the teacher etc. The left hand does most of the work initially. If the teacher thinks she should be the other way round he or she would restring it surely?

My son is left handed so I asked his guitar teacher prior to lessons if we should buy a left handed one he said not too as they are more costly and as he(the instuctor) is right handed it would be easier if DS could learn the right handed way .
(He is say that if DS found it too diffcult he would restring it himself)

DS has been playing right handed for 3 years now and never had a problem.

I would speak to the guitar teacher or the head of music in her school.

DS's first guitar was one from Argos and did him until he decided to move on to an electric one.

ds is a leftie - he got a leftie guitar - personally, i can't see how its fair to make then learn right handed - i mean could you do it left handed or should you have to? no. you shouldn't

ds even does it left handed on guitar hero.

imagine trying to make your fingers do complicated things - with the wrong hand

Tortington · 06/04/2009 02:09

and, they aren't THAT much more expensive.

bellavitalikesthesimnellife · 06/04/2009 08:34

It depends how they are going to play the guitar.

DS2 is lefthanded with writing but plays the guitar righthanded.

I think you need to see how comfortable she feels first.

Take her to a guitar shop and try out different guitars before you buy one.

Agree with Custardo, you can't make a child do something that does not come natural to them.

MrsWeasley · 06/04/2009 09:37

agree I would never make DS do anything He uses the computer righthanded too.

I should have just put the line "I would speak to the guitar teacher or the head of music in her school" and left it at that but it sounded so cold!!

Thanks for the replies

I was just looking at a few websites and came across the left handed ones which is why I was enquiring.
I will talk to school first, ds is there already so I can talk to his music teacher.

When I learned to play a guitar as a child I was told that left handed guitars did not exist, so I learned to play it right-handed.

Of course I have since learned that they did exist, and while I did learn to play it right-handed, it never felt natural to me.
