There is a book somewhat horrendously titled Smart Start Your Baby which is actually very good for giving you ideas for things to do with your dc, week by week, which I would really recommend.

At the mo he is in his cot looking at his hands and laughing to himself

Being able to amuse themselves is a highly desirable skill. I used to worry about this with my first. I don't with my second...
